Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bailey Lewis

Warriors Take Day One of the Holiday Tip-Off

Lewis shines with early points to set the Warriors' lead

ROCKLIN, Calif. –  Returning home after an exhibition match, the Warriors hosted the William Jessup University Holiday Tip-Off back in the Warrior Arena. The first game for Jessup was against Westcliff University. The Warriors bench shined in the matchup as Jessup was able to take the first game, 78-65. The Warriors take their record to 8-3, 2-0.

"It was a short turnaround from yesterday's game versus UC Davis and I believed it showed in how we played today," head coach Lance Von Vogt reflected. "I know for us to be ultimately successful this season we will need to perform better in back to back games."

William Jessup had an unusual start with all five players on the court being switched out two minutes into play, but that switch was extremely effective. The next three minutes saw Antonio Lewis hit back-to-back threes which helped give Jessup an eight-point lead early on. That lead held through the first half. Lewis' scoring slowed down slightly, but the rest of the team picked up the momentum as Tyras Rattler Jr. and Keith Phillips each jumped to six points with six minutes left to play.

Each team struggled slightly with control of the ball in the first half. Jessup had seven turnovers while Westcliff had nine. However, Jessup was able to capitalize on rebounds as they earned 12 points off rebounds and 12 second-chance points. The first half ended with the Jessup Warriors leading, 42-27. The bench was responsible for 22 of Jessup's points. Lewis' early break had him lead the team's scoring in the first half with eight points; however, Isaiah Milan, Rattler Jr., and Philips were close behind with six points each.

The second half started with Lewis mirroring his shooting in the first half. Lewis busted out the first points for Jessup with a three-point basket and followed it up in the next possession with a layup.

"It was nice to see Tone back out on the floor after being out this past week with injury," said Von Vogt. "I thought he brought us a spark in both the 1st half and 2nd half when we needed it most."

Much like the first half, the scoring was spread fairly even for Jessup as Austin Dill climbed to six points and Wilson LaShells claimed five. Phillips pushed himself into double digits with a three-pointer and steadily increased the lead for Jessup. Rattler Jr. also increased his point total, earning nine by the end of the game. With three minutes remaining, Phillips had a dunked to give Jessup a 20 point lead and then maintained that with a couple free throws. At the final buzzer, the Jessup Warriors won, 78-65.

Overall, the Warriors shot 42% in the field and 32% from the arch while Westcliff was 46% and 30%. The bench was responsible for 43 of Jessup's points. In the end, Phillips led the team in scoring with 18 points and Lewis followed with 17 of his own. Milan had five assists and tied Lewis and Dill for rebounds with eight apiece. Jessup earned 49 rebounds which led to 22 points in the second half, and were able to secure 21 points off of forced turnovers.

The Warriors are back in the Arena on Wednesday, December 19th, for a matchup against Pacific Union College to close out their time in the WJU Holiday Tip-Off. After the Christmas break, the Warriors are back on the court for the William Jessup New Year's Classic with games on December 27th at 7:30 PM and December 29th at 3:00 PM.
