Warriors Finish the New Year’s Classic on Top

Four Warriors reach double digits and take game two of the Classic.

ROCKLIN, Calif. –  The William Jessup New Year's Classic started off on a high note for the Warriors, so they sought to finish well on the final day. The Warriors faced off against the UC Merced Bobcats in Warrior Arena, and the final score read in the Warriors favor, 86-60. The win takes the Warriors to an 11-3 record overall, extending their win streak to six.

"This was a complete effort against a very good and well coached UC Merced team," head coach Lance Von Vogt reflected postgame. "I am proud of how we played defense for the most part and how we shared the ball.  We still have a lot of room for growth and we are nowhere close to what we will be in late January and February."

The first half started strong for the Warriors due to a three-point basket by Darell Polee. Antonio Lewis followed it up with a three-point basket of his own, and the Warriors began an offensive push that would last throughout the first half. That push had a momentary lapse about five minutes in as the Bobcats were able to take the lead on a couple possessions, but the Warriors answered that lead change with a three-pointer by Keith Phillips and a layup by Polee to change the momentum back in their favor. The lead stayed fairly close for the next ten minutes, but in the last five minutes Tyras Rattler Jr., Polee, Phillips, and Lewis were dynamic and helped secure a strong lead for the Warriors.

The first half ended with Phillips holding 13 points, while Polee and Lewis followed with nine and seven respectively. The Warriors found their stride in the last few minutes, and the second half saw that stride develop even further.

"It is nice to have Darrell back in the flow. He played really well today and that bodes very well for us in the future," Von Vogt went on to speak on leading scorer Phillips, "Keith is starting to show the consistency that we need from him and his defensive awareness and execution has really improved over the last month."

Phillips dominated in the second half as he started the Warriors scoring off with a layup. Within the first ten minutes, Phillips doubled his point total with 23 points to his name. Phillips led in the first ten minutes, but Lewis, Polee, Rattler Jr., and Isaiah Milan all joined in during the last ten minutes. That offensive surge pushed the Warriors to increase their shooting, resulting in Jessup going 33-63 (52.4%) in the field overall, while they shot 9-24 from the arc (64.7%) and 11-17 (64.7%) from the charity stripe. 40 of the Warriors' 86 points were shot from the paint, and 18 were second-chance points.

Phillips led in scoring with his 23 points, but Rattler Jr. (15), Polee (13), and Lewis (11) were all close behind. Phillips also led the team in rebounds as he picked up 9 of the Warriors' 46 rebounds. Lewis and Rattler Jr. followed in rebounds with seven each.

The Warriors travel down to Santa Clarita for a game against The Master's University Mustangs on Thursday, January 3rd, at 7:30 PM and then to Santa Barbara for a matchup against Westmont College on Saturday, January 5th, at 3:00 PM.

"Moving forward it is all GSAC games and we start at No. 2 ranked in the country, The Master's, who is in my opinion the most talented team in the country," Von Vogt said. "Coach Starr does an amazing job with them and we are gonna have our hands full in every sense of the word."
