Warriors Fight Back from Slow Start

ROCKLIN, Calif.  - The Lady Warriors returned to Horton Court after being on the road for the past three conference matchups, coming off a strong win over the San Diego Christian Hawks last Saturday. Tonight Jessup hosted the nationally recognized Master's University Mustangs in another nail-biter as the Warriors battle to the finish but came on the losing end, 66-61.

Out to a slow start, the Warriors trailed through the first quarter, but came back to get within three as leading scorer on the night, Miranda Zaragoza finished in the last seconds of the first quarter with an and-one three-point play.

The trend would continue as the Warriors powered through the following quarter where they left off. Olivia Luu would open the second quarter with a deep three to tie it and Lily Hagerty took it through the lane for the go-ahead basket (21-19) just three minutes into the second quarter. Getting ahead of the Mustangs by as much as 5, the Warriors ended the first half on the positive side with the three-point advantage (32-29) off another buzzer beater, this time from Leilua Iosia.

A trio of buckets to open the third quarter gave Jessup their highest lead of the game in 9. But the Mustangs would continue to exchange baskets with the Warriors through the quarter and gain the lead and advantage by one heading into the final 10-minutes of play.

The fourth quarter would start in favor of the Warriors as Iosia kicked things off with the go-ahead basket through the lane, but the Mustangs would tie it up again and take the lead to the finish at the 6-minute mark, but the Warriors never trailing by double-digits.

Down by 5 with 12 seconds left, Smith would get the Warriors within one possession, 62-59, but a foul and pair of three throws would extend the lead back to two possessions. Smith would grab another quick two through the lane, but time would expire in favor of the Mustangs, 66-61.

Zaragoza led the Warriors in the stat lines with 12 points and 6 rebounds with contributions from Iosia (11) and Smith (9).

Jessup will be back in action this Saturday for Salute Service Day in Warrior Arena at 1 pm as they take on another nationally recognized team in Westmont College. We invite all those that serve our community in any public service capacity to join us as we thank you for your dedication to this community.
