LINCOLN, Calif. - The Warriors hosted their first GSAC contest extending their seven-game win streak with a victory over the visiting San Diego Christian Hawks (7-6, 2-2) in the first game of the three-game series at McBean Park.
It was a slow start for both teams, as last week's GSAC Pitcher of the Week,
Ashkhon Kuhaulua, scattered 4 hits in the first 4 innings where San Diego would get on the scoreboard first in the top of the 4th with a solo home run.
However, the Warriors were not complacent with trailing the Hawks and exploded offensively in the bottom of the 5th. First to cross the plate was
Noah Shackles, as he made his way around the bases on a
Sam Curtis sac bunt, coupled with an SDC error at first to tie the game at one apiece. Up next was
Kawai Takemura with a single to left field, advancing Curtis to third who would eventually be brought home on a fielder's choice.
Joe Starick would put up a double to right centerfield, bringing home both Takemura and
Will Law to further Jessup's lead to 4-1.
Continuing the offensive attack with two outs on the board,
Steve Pastora's single would bring Starick, who had stolen second was in scoring position, across the plate. To finish the frame
Josh Duitsman's RBI single brought Pastora home, concluding the Warrior's 6-run inning.
The Hawks would attempt a rally in the top of the 7th, as they brought a player around on a string of singles with two outs. The rally would be short lived as
Cameron Morrow allowed only one run and struck out the last batter to put an end to the comeback, with the score at 6-3.
The Warriors would hold the Hawks at bay, in a combination of talented pitching from
Tyler Fujimoto and smart defensive play. Head Coach
Jake McKinley commented, "I was proud of the maturity we showed today, especially when we fell behind. The guys found a way to push across runs when we needed them and our pitching kept it close all along. Today was a great team win."
Jessup advances to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The Warriors return to the diamond tomorrow, February 10th, in a doubleheader against San Diego Christian at 11 am and 2 pm.
