PHOENIX, Ariz. - Coming off a two-game sweep of Arizona Christian in their conference opener yesterday, the Lady Warriors softball team took on future GSAC competitor Ottawa University- AZ in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors took the pair of wins over the Spirit, now riding a four-game win streak, advancing to 17-8 overall.
GAME 1
It was a first-frame lead for the Warriors as they took the batter's box first and
Abbie Lewis got things started with a single, followed by a steal and coming in to score on a
Shelbi Graifman single.
It wouldn't be until the third inning that the bats returned for Jessup as a triple-threat of doubles would bring in a pair of runs, served up by
Corina Salinas, Graifman and
Taya Ruiz.
Mason Marshall would single followed by the fourth double of the inning by
Jena Ovens to take the 5-0 lead.
The solo run of the game for the Spirit would come in the following frame as the Warriors would make a few errors to eliminate the shutout for Graifman. The senior pitcher would only allow one hit for Ottawa in her four innings pitched, with two strikeouts.
Brooke Sarro would finish the game for the Warriors allowing no runs or hits with one strikeout.
The Warriors would add another run in the fourth, sixth and seventh inning capped by a home run from the closing pitcher, Sarro, her first of the season. Jessup closing game one of the series, 8-1 hitting a season-record 5 doubles against the Spirit.
GAME 2
Graifman would return to the circle in game two for her fourth win of the weekend pitching a complete seven innings in the final game of the week allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.
Again, getting ahead early, the Warriors would push a run across in the first two innings with help from Salinas and Lewis getting on and Ruiz with the RBI to go up 1-0, followed by a pair of singles from
Lauren Garoutte and
Stephanie Scott with the RBI now 2-0 lead.
It would go silent for three innings before the Warrior bats broke it up with a five-run inning. Rachel Hooper would start things off with a single as
Arianna Barton came in to run and found her way home on a Spirit error as Ovens reaching on a bunt. With two runners on Lewis would hit a triple to deep right bringing another two runs in and would come in score on a fielding error by Ottawa, now 7-0 in the sixth.
Another single-run game for the Spirit would come in the bottom of the sixth off a Warrior error, but a quick seventh would seal the deal for the Warriors 7-1 for their second sweep of the week.
Jessup will return to their home field this week to host a pair of conference matchups, first against San Diego Christian slated for Friday and Vanguard University on Saturday. With rain in the forecast please be sure to check jessupathletics.com for up to date information and game times.
