ATHERTON, Calif. - The Warriors hit the road for what would be a pair of games fighting the weather at Menlo College as Jessup hosted No. 5 Vanguard Athletics in their first conference meeting with the Lions. Battling the weather, the Warriors fell in game one with rain on and off 8-4 with game two finished through the fifth as the Lions held a 7-1 lead, the final two innings still yet to be played.
With a steady rainfall to start the Lions would capitalize on a wild pitch to score their first run of the game, but it would be the Warriors who battled back in the following frame with bases load.
Taya Ruiz would rip one up the middle for the RBI single making it a new ballgame 1-1.
In the bottom of the third, the Lions would add another pair of runs with a line-drive homer over the centerfield fence and RBI-triple, also to the fence. Another four would come across the plate in the following inning as the Warriors trailed 7-1.
Ruiz would start things off in the bottom of the fourth with a single, followed by a double by
Lauren Garoutte to bring in Ruiz and a triple to bring Garoutte around by
Jenna Patterson. Salinas would get the final RBI in the inning with a single to score Patterson as the Warriors trailed 7-4.
Vanguard would push one more across to secure the 8-4 victory in game one handing the Warriors their first conference loss, now 17-9, 2-1.
Game two would get started in similar fashion as the Lions took the early 1-0 and Jessup would have a pair of singles in the bottom of the inning by
Shelbi Graifman and
Natalie Basaldua but they would be left stranded.
The Lions would add another four runs in the top of the third against the starter in both contests
Shelbi Graifman and a single run in the fifth to go up 7-0.
Salinas would bring in the solo run for the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth as
Stephanie Scott started things off with a single and Salinas brought her in with a double. Another two runners would get on in the bottom of the inning but unable to cross the plate.
In the top of the sixth, the game was called due to darkness, as the Lions led 7-1 with two innings left to play at a later time.
Heading to Southern California this weekend, the Warriors will face a non-conference matchup with La Sierra before returning to conference play against Hope International on Saturday.
