LINCOLN, Calif. - The Jessup baseball team took the field on Monday night rain or not to face Simpson University looking to seek justice and that is exactly what they did. The Warriors would hold the Red Hawks scoreless through eight innings, allowing only one run in the bottom of the ninth with the rain coming down. But the final strikeout would seal the deal and as the Warriors came out on top with an 8-1 victory advancing to 26-6 overall.
Head coach
Jake McKinley credits his team's performance and discipline throughout the game, "Kudos to our players for showing up and playing a great game tonight. I thought the group showed a lot of poise early on when the game was tight and capitalized on opportunities."
Starting for the Warriors on the bump was
Danny Vietti who pitched a scoreless five innings to collect his second win of the season, allowing just three hits with a strong defense behind him.
"The big key tonight was Danny giving us a quality start," McKinely said. "He attacked the zone and used his defense effectively."
Leading things off for their first plate appearance of the night was
Kawai Takemura who didn't waste any time as he sent the 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for an early 1-0 lead over the Red Hawks.
The bats would be at bay through the fourth inning on both sides but a burst of energy sparked the Warrior dugout as they added runs in each of the following frames to the finish.
In the bottom of the fifth
Sam Curtis would lead off and follow Takemura's bomb with his own solo home run to start the inning, followed up shortly after with
Will Law going opposite for his ninth home run of the season and the teams 48th.
Heading into the next inning up 3-0, the Warriors would add another three runs with a two-out rally led by
Sam Curtis bringing in
Steve Pastora and Howell with a double down the left field line. Takemura would respond with a single to bring in Curtis for the 6-0 advantage.
The Warriors would bring their final two runs in the seventh and eighth on errors by the Red Hawks to go up 8-0. Simpson would attempt to rally back pushing one across in the last-chance inning but relief pitcher
Cameron Morrow battled back from a 3-0 count with two runners in scoring position to strikeout out the final batter and seal the win for the Warriors.
Curtis would lead the Warriors going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's followed by Takemura with a pair of hits and 3 RBIs. The Warriors will host The Master's this weekend for a three-game series at McBean Park.
