Jessup Baseball Opens Bracket Play with 12-4 Victory over Judson

The Warriors host their first NAIA Opening Round looking to advance to Nationals

LINCOLN, Calif. - Heading into their first NAIA Opening Round competition and hosting for the first time in program history, the Warriors entered the bracket ranked No. 1 against their four competitors while awaiting their opponent to be decided in the opening game on Monday. Jessup faced No. 4 Judson University with a strong start scoring over half their runs in the first two innings en route to a 12-4 victory, improving to 39-15 while advancing to the semi-finals on Tuesday.

After a 19-8 victory in game one against the University of British Columbia, the Eagles continued where they left off pushing a run across the plate with just one out in the first inning. Despite an early lead, the Warriors lit up the scoreboard themselves in the following frame with Cal Koga bringing in the first run with a single to score Steve Pastora, and Josh Duitsman closing things out with a two-run double as the Warriors took the 3-1 advantage.

Picking up where they left off, Kawai Takemura would leadoff hitting a double to deep right. With two runners on, Will Law would smash the first home run of the game over the left-field wall to bring a trio of runs in and extend their lead 6-1, while Koga followed suit with his own solo shot to make it 7-1 after two innings.

Another five runs would cross the plate for Jessup in the fourth and fifth innings as the Warriors capitalized on some Eagle's errors. Pastora would bring in Shackles in the fifth with a double to shallow right, and Law would advance home on a fielder's choice. Starick kept the rally going with a  sacrifice fly and his second double of the day would come from Duitsman's bat to end the inning up 12-2.

The Eagles would start their own rally in the top of the eighth as the Warriors recorded three errors and Judson had bases loaded with two outs. Relief pitcher Danny Vietti would retire the final batter to close the inning and stop the late spurt by the Eagles.

Collecting his 10th win of the season was starting pitcher for the Warriors Tristan Prybylinski going 7.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits with 5 strikeouts.

Head coach Jake McKinley reflected on today's matchup, "I thought we played a pretty complete game against a really good team today. Tristan competed extremely well and the offense found various ways to produce runs."

The Warriors advance to take on No. 3 Antelope Valley tomorrow with first pitch slated for 12 pm. The Pioneers took down No. 2 Middle Georgia in a comeback win Monday afternoon 8-6. Both teams will look to continue their perfect record in the bracket to advance to the finals on Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament.
