Warriors Sweep Hawks for First Time in Program History

Warriors make comeback in third set for second program win over Hawks

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The William Jessup volleyball team finished off their two game road trip with a victory over the San Diego Christian Hawks, winning in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23. The three-set victory gives the Warriors their second win in conference play (2-1) and only their second program win over the Hawks.

Thrilled with her team's resilient performance on the road in the win, head coach Shasta Millhollin said, "Today's win is huge for us and shows the true grit and resilience of our team. We worked hard this week to improve offensively and today we transferred that hard work onto the court."

Upon scoring the game's opening point, the Warriors were down for a large portion of the first set. Vendela Williams would get a kill assisted by Taylor Jacky and the Warriors once again regained the lead, 13-12. From then on, there was no looking back and the Warriors ran away with set one, winning 25-18.

In the second set, the Warriors came out firing on all cylinders taking an early 9-4 lead. During the set, the Warriors would go on to lead by as much as 10 points. Michaela Zapata would go on to put the finishing touches on the set with a kill as Jessup won 25-17.

With the Warriors eager for the sweep and the Hawks clinging on to hope, these teams traded several points early in the third set. Eventually, the Warriors began to pull away as they led 14-9 midway through. However, as the set lingered on the Hawks went on a 14-6 scoring run and the Warriors were down 23-20. Jessup remained #warriorSTRONG going on a tear scoring five unanswered points to win 25-23 to claim the match.

Ashanti Grayer had a team-high 8 kills while Vendela Williams and Taylor Tarble each finished with 7. The Warriors were on fire from the service line finishing with 9 aces and Kacey Berger led with 3. Brianne Whitt once again finished with a team-high 13 assists while Madison Pelham had 11 assists. Taylor Jacky again showed she is relentless on the floor leading with 14 digs while Berger also played great logging 11 digs.

The Warriors will return home this coming week to take on Arizona Christian on Friday and new GSAC member Ottawa University - AZ on Saturday.

"The GSAC is the WILD WEST in terms of volleyball conferences in the NAIA," Millhollin concluded. "Any GSAC win is a big win. To beat San Diego Christian for the second time and first time in school history in straight sets is awesome! Coming back from behind in the third set to execute the win was the cherry on top!"
