ROCKLIN, Calif. -- The Warriors played the second game of their two-game homestand and second-straight five-set battle, this time defeating Ottawa University in the final game (25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 15-13).
"Every team in the GSAC is good. OUAZ is a very well coached team. They play solid relentless volleyball," head coach
Shasta Millhollin reflected. "We knew we would have to work hard to grind out a win, but we are proud of the grit that this team continues to show. They are fighters and bring the fighter mentality to every match."
With the game tied 12-12 in the first set,
Vendela Williams would record one of her game-high and tied career-high 17 kills to give the Warriors a one-point advantage. From then on, the Warriors kept their foot on the gas as they retained the lead for the remainder of the set.
Taylor Jacky would secure the win with the final kill from the back row as the Warriors took it 25-20.
Set two was an intense battle as late in the set the visiting Spirit started to pull away as they took the 20-16 lead over the Warriors.
Ashanti Grayer would help the Warriors as they scored three straight points bringing the set within one point. Despite the strong push down the stretch, the Warriors would go on to lose in extra points, 26-24.
The Warriors dug themselves into a hole early in set three as they trailed 4-0 from the jump. Once again it appeared as if the Spirit were primed to run away with it as they led 17-10, but with the help of Mackenzie Reeder-Esparza and Williams, the Warriors scored five straight points. Even though the Warriors fought hard down the stretch, they would lose 25-20.
In the fourth set the Warriors would surrender the opening point, but after breaking a 1-1 tie they would hold the lead for the duration of the set. The Warriors were ready to close things out with a 24-19 lead, but the Spirit wouldn't go quietly as they scored three straight points bringing the set within two. After a timeout, the Warriors would claim the set 25-22.
Set five was the closest one of the match as these teams tied seven different times. Williams would break 13-13 after the long rally with a kill and an attack error on the Spirit gave the Warriors the thrilling win.
Williams led with 17 kills while Mackenzie Reeder-Esparza tallied 13 kills and
Michaela Zapata closed it out with her second-double digit game in a row with 11.
Alicia Borges would go on to finish with three aces from the service line and Alexandra Demaranville-Robinson had two of her own.
Brianne Whitt had another amazing performance as she had a season-high 36 assists and 9 digs. After setting a new season high last night with 31 digs,
Taylor Jacky replaced it with 39 in Saturday's contest, inking her name in the record books for second all-time digs in a single game.
Hitting the road, Jessup will take to Westmont College and The Master's University next week to start their five-game road stint.
