ROCKLIN, Calif. - Jessup women's basketball returned to Horton Court for their second GSAC matchup this week, this time welcoming San Diego Christian. The early lead for the Warriors would reign true throughout as they advance to 3-2 for GSAC in the 66-49 victory.
"It's great to get back in the win column against a much improved SDC team," head coach
Kurt Westendorp commented. "We've played some good basketball recently and it feels good to get rewarded!"
The Hawks came out firing with a pair of baskets, but it didn't take long for the Warriors to find their groove going on a 9-2 run for the 9-5 advantage midway through the opening quarter. The Warriors would extend their lead by as much as 12 points with a layup down the stretch from Joelyn Stirton but the Hawks would answer back in the final seconds cutting the lead to 10 (18-8).
Senior
Olivia Luu would open up the second period with a three-pointer followed by a bucket from
Emilee VanDyke to extend their lead to the largest of the game, 15 points. The game would go scoreless for over a minute before the Hawks would cut the home team's lead to 7.
A pair of baskets and Luu's second three of the game would close out the half with a 14-point advantage, Jessup up 31-17.
A strong start after the break would bring the Hawks within 7 just three minutes into the third quarter, but another offense burst would extend that to double figures with under four minutes left in the quarter. A buzzer-beater from the visiting San Diego Christian would make it a three-point game (47-44) with the final 10-minutes of play remaining.
Both teams would battle the starting minutes of the final quarter, but an and-one from Gehweiler would change momentum with 3:30 left and put the lead back to double figures for Jessup with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
"It was great to see our team respond the way we did in the 4th after a lackluster 3rd quarter. We got back to getting consistent stops and got what we wanted on the offensive end."
An 8-0 run would complete the win for the Warriors, 66-49, now 3-2 in conference matchups and 13-5 overall. Hagerty led the Warrior with 14 points, followed another pair offensively in double figures, Gehweiler (11) and Luu (10). While
Miranda Zaragoza also collected double-digits with 13 boards.
The Warriors will hit the road for the next two weeks for conference matchups starting at Arizona Christian and Ottawa University - AZ.
