SURPRISE, Ariz. - Headed into Saturday's early matchup, the GSAC men's basketball standings only saw one road win, but the Warriors set out to take on OUAZ to close their Arizona stint, in that breaking the norm. The Warriors prevailed in the 3-point win defeating the Spirit 98-95, improving to 14-6, 5-3.
"It was nice to dig out a road win today," head coach
Lance Von Vogt. "Every season has its ups and downs and we hit our speed bump this week. We struggled to find our rhythm both today and Thursday."
It was a back-and-forth motion through the first half as both teams exchanged leads with 4 points being the largest lead held through the first 9 minutes. The Warriors would bust open their lead as
Keith Phillips delivered the slam to spark an 11-2 run for a 10-point lead at the 7-minute mark of the first half.
A late three by the Spirit would cut the lead to 7 headed into the break, Jessup up 51-44 with the final half of regulations remaining.Â
The Warriors would take a 14-point lead midway through the second half, but the Spirit would cut the deficit in nearly half in a matter three minutes. With less than 3-minutes to play the lead would diminish to one basket and from then on, both teams would battle to the finish. With 7 seconds remaining, the Spirit would hit a deep three to cut the lead to one, but a pair of free-throws by
Tate DeLaVeaga would seal the deal as Jessup took home their first conference road win.
Leading with a season-high was
Darrell Polee who shot an impressive 6-for-11 from beyond the arc with 25 points. Another double-double (19pts, 13reb) for
Keith Phillips would make it 3 in a row and 12th-straight game in double digits, while teammate
Antonio Lewis also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double digits was
Isaiah Milan (12), Rattler Jr. (10).Â
The team will continue their travel this coming week taking on Hope International and Life Pacific.
"We are going to put this weekend behind us and dial back into the basics, the fundamentals that have put us where we are," Von Vogt concluded. "I know the road doesn't get any easier as we travel down south next week for road games at Hope and Life Pacific. We will need to be at our absolute best to find success there."
