Warriors Split with Fellow Nationally Ranked Foe, Pioneers

Jessup go 1-1 in early season ranked match up

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Today the #13 Warriors faced off against their last opponent of the 2018 season, the #7 University of Antelope Valley Pioneers.  The intense match-up of the nationally ranked programs resulted in both teams walking off the diamond with a win under their belts.

Game 1
After UAV scored a run in each of the first two innings of the game, the Warriors answered back in the bottom of the 3rd in a big way.  Austen Swift got the Warriors on the board with a solo home run.  Later in the inning, Joe Starick would double in Grant Doi, who was pinch running for Cal Koga, who reached on a base on balls.  Jordan Yu would follow with a double of his own, scoring Starick from second.  Grant St. Martin completed the scoring drive by reaching base on a throwing error, scoring Yu to finish the inning at 4-2 in Jessup's favor.

Noah Shackles started off the bottom of the 4th with a single.  After a Kawaiola Takemura hit by pitch and a Swift walk, Koga's sac fly, with the bases loaded, scored Shackles.  Jessup would take the 5-2 advantage to end the 4th.

The Pioneers battled back, scoring a pair of runs in the top half of both the 5th and 6th innings, regaining the lead, 6-5.  The lead would be short-lived as the Warriors would answer back with 4 runs of their own.  In the bottom of the 6th, Takemura and Swift hit back to back singles followed by Starick loading the bases on a hit by pitch. Yu's RBI ground out would score Takemura, setting the stage for St. Martin's 3 run homer to conclude Jessup's offense in game 1.  UAV would score a single run in the top of the 7th but the Warriors would close out the final two frames, winning game 1, 9-7.

Ricardo Torres earned the no-decision, giving up 4 runs on 5 innings of work while striking out 7 batters.  Tyler Fujimoto would scatter 4 hits in 2 ? innings, to only give up 1 run and earn the win for the Warriors.

Game 2
The Pioneers started the 2nd game off quick, tallying 5 runs in the first 2 innings.  They would add 3 more in the 3rd, creating too large of a lead for the Warriors to overcome. Jessup's offense awoke in the bottom of the 3rd doing all of their damage with 2 outs on the board.  Takemura would start off a series of singles, followed by Swift and Koga, who's hit up the middle would score Takemura.  The inning would be highlighted by St. Martin's second 3 run homer of the day, cutting the score to 8-4.

Antelope Valley expanded their lead to 12-4, until the bottom of the 7th when the Warrior's bats would heat up again.  Shackles would start it off with a single, being replaced by pinch-runner Doi.  Doi would then round the bases on a Jordan Williams double.  Takemura would single, moving Williams to third, followed by a Swift walk to load the bases.  Koga would then single, bringing home both runners in scoring position.  However, the Warriors would be held to 3 runs as the inning concluded with a foul out to right field, bringing the score to 12-7 in the Pioneer's favor.  The score would hold, seeing Antelope Valley take game 2 of the 3 game series.

The Warriors return to McBean Park at 10 am, Friday, February 1st to play the final game of the series between #7 University of Antelope Valley.
