Warriors battle with division one opponent

The William Jessup women’s basketball team played their second consecutive road game, facing off against UNR.

RENO, Nevada— The William Jessup Women's basketball team hit the road for their second straight contest, this time matching up against University of Nevada, Reno, losing 102-56. 
 
The Warriors were quick out of the gate, scoring the game's opening two points in a matter of seconds. Miranda Zaragoza controlled the jump-ball and Liz Gehweiler found JoeLyn Stirton cutting to the basket for the score. The fast start resulted in the Warriors taking an early lead, 6-2 over the Wolf Pack. 
 
Stirton had the hot hand early for the Warriors scoring six of the Warriors first eight points. At the end of the first quarter, Jessup trailed 29-11. 
 
At the start of the second quarter, Stirton made another great play, this time recording an assist as she got the ball to Aycee Willis who made the jump shot. The next possession down the floor the Warriors were able to get the ball down low to Miranda Zaragoza and she muscled her way in the paint scoring two points. 
 
Midway through the second quarter, Willis saw an open lane and she accelerated through it as she glided through the defense while spinning to her left and picking up two points in the process. At the half-time break, the Warriors trailed 57-25. 
 
Starting off the second half, the Warriors forced a missed shot and snagging the rebound was Creonah Bryant and she dished it off to Gehweiler who returned the favor and Bryant converted a layup on the other end. The Warriors had their highest-scoring quarter in the third, putting up 17 points. 
 
The Warriors fought hard all game long against the Wolf Pack but lost 102-56. Leading the Warriors in scoring on the night was Willis who scored 17 points. Bryant also scored in double-figures, finishing with 12 while Stirton and Zaragoza each ended with 8.
 
After the game head coach Kurt Westendorp spoke on the benefits of playing a tough opponent. "Tonight was a great night for us to be challenged at the highest level." Westendorp continued by saying, "We were able to execute and learn against division one athletes and it will make us better for our regular season." 
 
Westendorp was happy to have this chance for his team saying, "This game is such a great experience for our team to have this opportunity." He finished by noting how his focus is shifting to what's next on the schedule, "I'm looking forward to seeing us put the lessons learned tonight to the test this weekend at the Bill Holtz Classic."
 
Jessup women's basketball will return to Warrior Arena for their home opener against Oregon Institute of Technology on Friday, November 1st at 2 PM.
