Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Medearis' hot shooting leads Jessup to win over Simpson

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After a narrow loss to Simpson in the opening game of the Bill Holtz Classic last season, the Warriors (3-0) used a huge first half led by Luis Medearis to grab the win over the Red Hawks Friday afternoon 90-71.

Medearis scored a season-high 26 points thanks in large part to some hot shooting behind the arc as the senior guard from Downey, Calif. hit 6-of-10 on the night.

Warriors' head coach Lance Von Vogt said while the offensive display is what most will notice, it was the team's defensive pressure that came up big. "I liked the way we started the game defensively and I believe it really jump-started our offensive attack. At this point in the year, it's all about getting a little bit better every night and this game did that for us."

The Warriors blitzed the Red Hawks early grabbing a 7-2 lead by the 18:02 mark. After  Medearis' hot start where he scored eight points, Erik Kinnebrew and Isaiah Milan got into the act as Kinnebrew hit a deep three, then Milan engineered his own 5-0 run giving Jessup an 18-5 lead.

Milan got a steal and fast-break layup plus the foul at the 8:22 mark giving Jessup a 33-17 lead and the Warriors grabbed their first 20-point lead of the night at the 5:49 mark thanks to back to back threes from Medearis.

Medearis later hit another jumper and two free throws as Simpson looked to make a run just before halftime. At the break, the Warriors held a 51-35 advantage as the home team hit 11 of its' 22 threes.

Coming out of the locker room, Jessup continued their hot shooting as Milan hit his second three of the night. However, Simpson responded with a 7-0 run cutting the lead to just 12 at 54-42 with 17:20 left.

Nonetheless, the Warriors offense seemed to have answer all night, as Jayden DeJoseph got into a rhythm hitting back-to-back threes pushing the lead back to 18.

Kinnebrew then matched DeJoseph's effort a few minutes later as he hit on back-to-back threes by the 12:56 mark where Jessup led 71-49. Simpson made several small runs in the final minutes but never got the lead down to single digits as Jessup took the win by 19.

In addition to Medearis' effort, Milan added 21 points and a game-high six assists. Kinnebrew led the Warriors bench scoring with 16 points on 5-9 shooting beyond the arc, and Jaylen Johnson also had a nice game off the bench with three 3-pointers for nine points.

Von Vogt said recruiting and improving his players' shooting ability has been a key focus this off-season. "We've been intentional about recruiting guys that can shoot and also developing shooters in our program. Tonight that hard work paid off."

As a team, the Warriors shot 19-for-37 from three and 48-percent from the field overall. The Warriors will look to continue their hot shooting and finish the Bill Holtz Classic with another win tomorrow when they'll host Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m.
