Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Bryant's career night leads Warriors' win over PUC

ROCKLIN, Calif. - It's been nine days since the Jessup women's basketball team hit the floor and on Saturday night it was their swarming defense and hot shooting that led to an 80-47 victory over Pacific Union.

The Warriors' (4-1) win was their second against PUC in less than a month after Jessup opened the season with a win in Napa, Calif. on Oct. 24.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said Saturday's victory was needed as the team has played four straight at home. "It's been a great homestand for us getting our season off to a positive start. Winning at home is key to every successful season."

In the opening quarter, the Warriors were in a back-and-forth battle as both teams were tied at 10. Then the Warriors used a 16-1 run led by Creonah Bryant as the senior from Sacramento scored eight points in the opening 10 minutes on her way to a career-high 19.

By the end of the first, the Warriors held a 26-11 lead. In the second quarter, both teams struggled to score as the Warriors mustered just 11 points but held a 37-17 advantage at halftime.

Westendorp said that while his team had its fair share of mistakes, he also saw the potential for a high powered offense. "We had some great spurts tonight where we showed how explosive we can be offensively. We just have to find a way to use that success and be more consistent for an entire game."

To open the second half the Warriors blitzed the Pioneers with a 9-0 run extending their lead to 29 at 46-17 by the 8:23 mark of the third quarter. The 9-0 run was ignited by Miranda Zaragoza scoring on a driving layup, followed by two layups from JoeLyn Stirton and another three from Bryant.

At the end of three, Jessup led 62-38.

In the fourth, the Warriors continued their offensive attack extending their lead to 30 after Stirton sank two free-throws at the 4:57 mark. The Warriors would never look back from there as they cruised to their fourth win on the season.

As a team, Jessup shot an impressive 45-percent from beyond the arc including 4-for-5 from Bryant. The team also was effective from the free-throw line making 18-of-23. Westendorp said the hot shooting was thanks in large part to his player's good decision making. "I'm really pleased with how well we shared the basketball. Shooting a high percentage starts with good passing and we assisted on lots of scores tonight."

After Bryant's career-high, the Warriors also got good production from Zaragoza who added 15 and six rebounds, while Stirton rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11. Liz Gehweiler also had a nice game from the point guard spot as she flirted with a triple-double scoring eight points while adding six rebounds and seven assists.

The Warriors will now be on the road for nearly a month as they won't play in Warrior Arena again till Dec. 14. Jessup's' next game will be Tuesday at Simpson with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
