Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Christopher Engelage

Warriors suffer first loss of the season

Facing one of the top rated teams in the country, the Warriors were unable to keep pace, losing 97-44.

ROCKLIN, Calif –  The William Jessup Women's basketball team wrapped up the 13th annual Bill Holtz Classic in a matchup with the Southeastern University Fire. Jessup would lose the contest, 97-44.

Senior Creonah Bryant was the first Warrior to score, converting on a corner three off the pass from Liz Gehweiler. On the following defensive possession, JoeLyn Stirton recorded a steal and drained a three moments after, giving the Warriors the lead, 6-2.

Upon taking the lead with two early three-pointers, scoring became hard to come by and the Warriors were trailing the Fire, 28-12 at the end of the first quarter.

After the game head coach Kurt Westendorp said, "We had several spurts of good basketball but SEU's pace and physicality were too much for us."

In the second quarter, the offense of the Warriors struggled to find the basket until Bryant again hit from distance. Similar to the first quarter, Stirton added another steal to her totals on the following defensive possession. With the ball back in the hands of the Warriors, Bryant was able to get inside to the paint for two more points.

Throughout the first three quarters of the game, the Warriors' first made shot in each frame came from beyond the arc. During the third quarter, Stirton nailed the three-pointer off the pass from guard Jaqueline Magana. The Warriors fought hard till the final horn but suffered their first loss of the season, 97-44.

Warrior teams under the tutelage of Westendorp have shown year in and year out that they are fast learners and he plans on using this game as a stepping stone for his team to improve. "Overall, our team got better this week," said Westendorp, "We stepped up to play a division one team, got a marquee win over a good Oregon Tech team, and we'll learn from this contest tonight."

Next up on the schedule for the Warriors, they will host UC Merced on November 7th at 5:30 PM.
