Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors' late rally comes up short

LAKELAND, Fla. - After a furious come back that ended with a buzzer-beating game-winner on Monday, the Warriors put up a comeback effort in the second half of their game against Spring Arbor (MI) Wednesday night. However, the run came up short as the Warriors (7-3, 1-1 GSAC) fell 71-59 in the second game of their Florida road trip.

Lance Von Vogt said his team will need to use the loss as a teaching moment. "We have to learn from this. A big win on Monday doesn't earn you a win on Wednesday. I think we may have been a little full of ourselves coming into tonight's game and we got humbled by the defending NAIA D2 National Champs."

From the opening tip, the Warriors offense struggled from the field as they fell behind 15-6 with just over eight minutes left in the half. The Warriors offense shot just 2-15 from the field in the opening 13 minutes of play, but their strong defense kept them within striking range.

After Spring Arbor took their first double-digit lead of the game with 6:56 left, Jayden DeJoeseph broke a nearly 12-minute drought from the field when he hit Jessup's first three-pointer of the game.

From there, the Warriors went on to cut SAU's lead to four on back-to-back possessions when Luis Medearis scored on a driving layup, and Tarren Storey-Way put in his first points of the season coming off the bench.

Spring Arbor responded well as they closed the half on a 12-5 run giving them a 31-20 advantage heading into the break.

SAU started the second half similar to the first as they went on a 5-0 run grabbing a 16 point lead forcing a Jessup timeout. However, SAU continued their strong play as Jessup trailed by 20 with 16:25 left.

With the Warriors looking for answers offensively Von Vogt decided to make an adjustment from their usual man-to-man defense into a zone at the eight-minute mark.

The adjustment seemed to work perfectly as the Warriors forced seven turnovers helping cut the 20-point deficit down to eight.

Nonetheless, the Warriors weren't able to get any closer as they eventually fell by 12.

"Spring Arbor brought the energy and execution needed to win the game. It wasn't until about nine minutes to go when we went to our zone defense that we looked like ourselves. But the 22 point deficit was too much against a team that good."

As a team, the Warriors shot 33-percent from the field and made just 6-of-22 from three-point range.

Austin Dill had one of his best games nearly notching a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Dill came up big on the glass as the Spokane, Wash. native tied his career-high with seven offensive rebounds.

Isaiah Milan matched Dill with 12 points of his own and Storey-Way also had a decent game off the bench adding six points and six rebounds.

The Warriors will play one final game in Florida Friday afternoon against host school Southeastern with tip-off set for 11 a.m. (PST).
