Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Big second quarter pushes Warriors to victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup women's basketball team ended their 2019 calendar year on a positive note thanks to a huge second quarter that ultimately led to a 66-52 victory over Cal Maritime Thursday afternoon.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said he was pleased to see his team grind out a win even though they didn't shoot well from the field. "Today was a great rebounding performance, up and down our line up. To win by double-digits when you shoot a lower percentage than your opponent means we took care of business in all the possession stats."

In the opening quarter, neither team gained much traction as the Warriors took a four-point lead with just over a minute remaining, but Maritime scored three more points to end the quarter as Jessup led 12-11.

As the second quarter began the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to grab a nine-point cushion with 8:13 left, but Maritime continued to battle back as they eventually cut the lead back down to two after a quick 5-0 run of their own.

Miranda Zaragoza then made her presence felt as she scored eight points, had two steals, and a block in the second frame alone and her score at the 1:19 mark gave Jessup it's first double-digit lead of the night. Creonah Bryant then extended the lead with a three as the Warriors outscored Maritime 24-12 in the second quarter.

At halftime, Jessup led 36-23.

To start the third, the Warriors pushed their lead up to 18 points at the 5:20 mark thanks to a layin from Caitlyn Bowman and later in the quarter Jessup scored 5 consecutive points and led 51-39 at the end the period.

In the fourth, the Warriors essentially traded baskets with Maritime as the Keelhaulers never got within 12 and the Warriors cruised to their second consecutive win. As a team, the Warriors grabbed 22 offensive rebounds compared to Maritime's six.

Zaragoza led the Warriors offensive attack as she tallied a game-high 21 points and a season-high 19 rebounds including 10 on the offensive glass. Bryant also continued her hot streak as the senior from Sacramento scored 18 points and has now scored in double figures in five consecutive games. JoeLyn Stirton then rounded out the Warriors double-figure scorers with 14.

Westendorp added that the preseason schedule was good for his team as they look forward to the new year. "It's nice to close out the non-conference slate with a win going into our Christmas break. We've challenged ourselves with our schedule and will be prepared to jump back into GSAC play when we return. Our next four games will be against top-25 opponents so we're looking forward to it."

The Warriors' next matchup will be against No. 22 Menlo Jan. 4 in Warrior Arena tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
