Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Storey-Way beats the buzzer against PUC

ROCKLIN, Calif - After nearly two months away from Warrior Arena, the Jessup men's basketball team returned with a bang thanks to a buzzer-beating three from Tarren Storey-Way downing Pacific Union 59-56 on the opening day of the New Year's Classic Monday evening.

Jessup (8-5) used a 15-0 run in the second half to climb back into the game after trailing by double-digits and eventually made their mark on the final shot.

While the win was a welcomed result, coach Lance Von Vogt said his squad can play even better, "Our energy, defense, and offensive rebounding kept us in the game while we struggled with making shots. We simply missed way too many point-blank layups and wide-open threes."

The Warriors had a balanced attack most of the night as five players scored at least eight points led by 13 from Luis Medearis and Jessup ended up out-scoring the PUC bench 19-12 something Von Vogt said kept his team afloat. "The second unit really got us back into it during the second half and our zone really changed the complexion of the game."

In the early stages, the Warriors were dominant on the offensive glass as they grabbed six offensive rebounds in the opening five minutes of play helping them take an 8-4 lead. However, the Pioneers responded nicely as they tied things up at 11 by the 12:50 mark.

From there, the half became a defensive battle until Medearis hit a deep wing three that gave Jessup a 25-19 lead. But just as they did earlier PUC had an answer as they cut Jessup's lead back down to one at 27-26.

At halftime, Jessup found themselves trailing 32-30 as both teams went scoreless in the final 90 seconds.

In the second half, Oliver Amajoyi tied things up with a huge two-handed slam but the Pioneers came out on fire using a 9-2 run to take a 41-32 lead forcing a Jessup time out.

Then later in the half, after PUC took a 49-36 lead Erik Kinnebrew got into the action with back-to-back three-pointers cutting the lead to single digits. The Warriors continued their push as they went on to score an additional nine unanswered points capped off by another Medearis three that gave Jessup a 51-49 advantage with 4:41 left.

After consecutive scores from the Pioneers helped them regain the lead, Amajoyi and Milan scored for Jessup to tie things up heading into the final minute.

With 1.9 seconds left and the score tied at 56, Wilson Lashells launched a perfect pass down court to Storey-Way who caught the ball and shot in one motion sinking the three-pointer as time expired.

While the Warriors shooting from the field was lower than expected the team did a tremendous job on the glass grabbing 20 offensive rebounds. Individually behind Medearis, Amajoyi had a career game with his first double-double tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds. Storey-Way and Kinnebrew led the bench combining for 17 points.

The Warriors return to action Tuesday evening when they'll face UC Merced in a rematch of a thrilling game back on Nov. 11 when the Bobcats squeezed out a four-point home victory, tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
