Warriors' balanced attack leads to conference opening win

FULLERTON, Calif. - After 11 days off the Jessup women's basketball team (6-3, GSAC 1-0) opened GSAC play on the road Thursday night with a balanced attack that led to a 78-70 win over Hope International.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said earning any road win is tough in the GSAC, "It's great to open GSAC play with a road win. This league is a grind and tonight's win is going to pay dividends as the season plays out."

The game began with both teams trading baskets in the opening five minutes as Hope (9-1, GSAC 0-1) held an 8-7 lead at the 5:05 mark. In the final minutes of the first quarter, both teams offenses got on track as HIU took a 19-16 lead by the end of the first.

In the second quarter, the Warriors quickly cut into HIU's lead thanks to a three from Creonah Bryant, a lay-in from JoeLyn Stirton, and a jumper from Liz Gehweiler as they closed the gap to one with 7:23 left.

In the final two minutes of the half, the Warriors scored on their final three possessions to gain momentum going into halftime down just 38-35 with plenty of time left to play.

It was a hot start for the Warriors as they scored seven unanswered points including back-to-back layups from Gehweiler and a three from Aycee Willis forcing a timeout from the home team as Jessup led 42-38.

The Warriors later held their biggest lead of the game at 50-40 thanks to a jumper and free throw from Bryant at the 5:13 mark. However, the Royals closed the quarter on a 15-7 run cutting Jessup's advantage to just two at 57-55 to start the fourth.

Jessup began the final quarter with another strong run this time a 7-2 spurt that gave the Warriors a 64-57 lead by the 8:13 mark.

However, Hope responded later in the quarter with their own 5-0 run bringing the score to 66-62 with 4:58 left.

The Warriors regained another double-digit lead at 74-64 with 1:09 left and from there used some good free-throw shooting down the stretch to seal the eight-point win.

With the win, Westendorp moved into second place for all-time wins (50) at Jessup.

Westendorp said his team will enjoy the win then refocus on their next task coming up on Saturday, "I'm looking forward to Saturday and the opportunity for us to get a road sweep. We did a great job starting off the second half tonight with determination and we will need that kind of effort going forward."

The Warriors had four players score in double figures led by Zaragoza who notched a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Bryant followed behind her with 17 points while Gehweiler and Stirton rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 and 12 points respectively.

On the night the Warriors shot 50-percent from the field (28-56) and 73 percent from the free-throw line (17-23). Jessup continues their road trip at Life Pacific on Saturday at 12 p.m.
