SURPRISE, Ariz. - Hitting the road for their farthest conference matchups for the season was the Jessup softball team with their first stop at new GSAC opponent, Ottawa University - AZ. The Warriors would face the Spirit Thursday night in a make-up game losing 7-2 but bounced back splitting with the home team dropping game one in the final inning, 5-4, but taking game two 15-2.
Fresh off their flight, the Warriors headed to the Spirit's diamond for a rescheduled matchup that wasn't played last month in Rocklin due to weather. The Warriors would take the early lead, but the home team would prevail answering that lead and not looking back as a late run would secure the win, 7-2. The pair would split on the Warrior's hosted series winning the first matchup March 1st 7-3.
Friday both teams returned to the field for their normal scheduled doubleheader where again, an early lead by the Warriors would see an answer from the Spirit.
Mehana Johns would dominate the box for Jessup as she brought in the first run of the game with an RBI double, followed by a game-tying solo shot in the sixth inning to make it 2-2. The Spirit would match that run and add another for the 4-2 lead, but another answer for the Warriors would tie it up as
Lauren Garoutte brought in the two-RBI single.
A final chance inning would favor the home team as they took game one in a walk-off single, 5-4.
A fire would ignite for the Warriors in game two as they put up 11 of their 15 runs in the first three innings, not leaving a box unchecked with a run in each inning.
Johns would continue where she left off with a leadoff double,
Natalie Basaldua bringing in the first run of the game with Ovens scoring Lewis and Chelsea Kam-Aweau bringing in the final run of the inning.
A pair of two-RBI singles by Johns and Garoutte would keep the rally going in the second frame extending their lead, 7-0. With her second double of the game, Johns brought in another two arunners in the third to total a game-high five RBIs.
Three in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth would secure the win for the Warriors, 15-2 as the game would expire due to the mercy rule.
Taylor Garcia would pitch the complete game allowing just two runs while collecting her fifth win on the season.
The Warriors, now 10-14, 5-9 will take the short drive to Phoenix tomorrow taking on Arizona Christian to close out their road trip for the weekend.
