PHOENIX, Ariz. - Closing out their 5-game road series in Arizona, the Warriors took their final stop at Arizona Christian where they held the one-run advantage in each game for the series sweep before heading back home now 12-14, 7-9.
"We knew coming in this would be a long weekend for us and to play quality softball at the end shows mental and physical toughness," head coach
Kristen Drage said. "Overall the team rebounded and adjusted well after two poorly executed games to start the trip."
Strong out the gate in both games, the Warriors took a 3-2 advantage in the second inning of game one capitalizing on the Firestorm's error to push their first run across, and a two-RBI single by
Abbie Lewis would secure the lead.
Another pair of runs would cross the plate for Jessup, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, a solo shot by Mahana Johns for the 5-2 advantage. The Firestorm would attempt a comeback in the final inning pushing two runs across, but sophomore
Taylor Garcia would complete her sixth win of the season from the circle, 5-4.
Johns and Lewis led the Warriors going 2-for-4 with a combined 3 RBIs. The dynamic duo would continue in game two as Johns came in to score the first run on a Lewis triple.
Natalie Basaldua followed with a single to bring in Lewis and
Jenna Patterson would end the inning with a home run as the Warriors took an early 3-0 lead.
The Warriors would go silent as the Firestorm took the lead in the bottom of the fifth putting up four runs, but it wouldn't take long for the Warriors to answer back. The following frame another two runs would be tallied for Jessup to regain the lead 6-4 adding one final run in the top of seven, 7-4.
Another late rally would be cut short for ACU as they posted a pair of runs in the final inning but
Brooke Sarro would collect her fifth win of the season in the 7-6 victory.
Jeno Ovens would lead the Warriors in the final game of the road trip, 2-for-4 followed by a pair of RBI's from Johns and Basaldua.
Drage commented on the Warrior's versatility throughout the lineup, "We have a great balance of speed, power, and small game. If everyone executes properly it's tough to find an out in our line-up. It was nice to see it all come together and all the players contributing in the last three games.
The Warriors will head out on their final road trip of the regular season next week taking on San Diego Christian and St. Katherine.
"Right now it's great momentum for us to finish strong and head into GSAC tournament confident and ready to execute," Drage concluded. "We have a quick turn around flying home tonight and then back out Thursday, but we are ready for it."
