Final Home Game of 2019 Ends in Split

The Warriors took one from the Lions in game one, but the visiting team rallied back to take game two

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The William Jessup Warrior's softball team split a doubleheader against the No. 10 Vanguard Lions on Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 5-4 and falling in game two, 15-4.

In game one of the series, Mehana Johns would capitalize off a double from her teammate Abbie Lewis by recording an RBI single scoring the first run. Despite the early lead, trouble started brewing for the Warriors in the top of the second inning as the Lions put up three runs in the frame.

Jenna Patterson would get the bottom of the third inning started off with a walk and that was followed up with four consecutive base hits. The offensive surge resulted in the Warriors scoring four runs in the inning as they took the lead 5-3.

The remaining three and a half innings became a defensive battle and even though the Lions put up an additional run, the Warriors remained strong and hung on to the game one victory, 5-4 over the Lions.

Lewis reached on three of her four plate attempts while Lauren Garoutte tallied two hits in four plate appearances. Johns would lead her squad with 3 RBI as she recorded three hits in her four times at the plate. Brooke Sarro was the winning pitcher as she was on the mound for all seven innings, pushing her record to 9-7 on the season.

The second game got off to a rocky start for the Warriors as they allowed three runs in the first inning. However, the Warriors got some two-out magic in the bottom of the second as Natalie Basaldua reached on a base hit followed by Mikayla Laymance being walked. Taya Ruiz would then step to the plate and crush a ball to the right field fence scoring two runs.

Momentum was afoot after holding the Lions scoreless in consecutive innings and the Warriors would take their first lead of the game after savvy base running from Lewis and Garoutte was coupled with base hits from Chelsie Kam-Aweau and Jena Ovens. After three innings the Warriors led 4-3.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, the momentous run wouldn't last, as they were unable to score for the remainder of the game with the final score reading 15-4 in the Lions favor.

This marked the final home game of the season and the Warriors will hit the road for a doubleheader against the Menlo Oaks on Wednesday, April 24 with game times scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
