ATHERTON, Calif. - In the final conference series of the season, the Jessup softball team faced regional rival Menlo College, going 1-1 in Wednesday's doubleheader in Atherton winning in comeback fashion 8-6 in game one, but losing 7-2 in game two.
From the start of game one, it looked like the Warriors (18-18 overall, 10-12 GSAC) would struggle to grab any wins in the regular season finale when the Menlo quickly erased a 1-0 lead with a four-run first inning at the plate.
Menlo continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning adding another two runs giving them a 6-1 lead before the third inning got underway.
But the third inning proved to be vital as the Warriors scored four runs to tie the game at 6 all, and then added two more runs in the sixth inning to grab the lead for good thanks to a 2-run homer from
Jenna Patterson, her third of the season. On the mound,
Brooke Sarro pitched all seven innings allowing 13 hits and five earned runs.
On the game, the Warriors just narrowly out hit Menlo racking up 14 hits led by Patterson who had three hits, and three RBIs in five at-bats. Four other Warriors scored runs in the game to help pace the Jessup attack.
In game two, Jessup got off to a good start scoring in the opening frame, but Menlo answered back scoring a run of their own to tie it up. However, just like in game one, the third inning proved to be the turning point as the Oaks scored two runs taking a 3-1 lead.
The Oaks defense and pitching then stepped up the rest of the afternoon holding Jessup to just one more run. In the sixth inning, Menlo added four insurance runs giving them the five-run lead that proved to be enough.
For the Jessup offense,
Abbie Lewis led the way going two for four with two runs scored. On the mound,
Taylor Garcia pitched five and a third inning allowing nine hits and four earned runs.
