LINCOLN, Calif. - The William Jessup Warrior baseball team continued their hot streak with a pair of wins over the Hope International Royals on Wednesday as they claimed game one 6-3 and game two 8-6.
After trailing by two runs in game one, the Warriors would plate their first run as
Jordan Yu took full advantage of a Royals fielding error. Despite scoring the run, the Warriors would find themselves down 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the fifth,
Kawaiola Takemura hit his eleventh triple of the season, and it scored Yu once again for the Warriors second run. Then it was
Joe Starick who followed that up with a sac-fly RBI scoring Takemura to tie the game, 3-3. With the game all tied up in the sixth inning,
Will Law stepped to the plate with two runners on and launched a bomb over the left field fence, giving the Warriors a momentous lift and 6-3 lead.
Senior
Grant St. Martin started the game and was strong throughout, despite only pitching one inning prior to this game. St. Martin would go 5.2 innings allowing three runs with five strikeouts. It was
Tyler Fujimoto, however, who tallied the 'W' in the win column as he pitched 3.1 innings allowing four hits and no runs while striking out seven batters putting his record at 3-1.
Head coach
Trevor Paine noted the contributions he gets from his team, saying, "It's good to keep getting contributions from lots of different guys. St. Martin has thrown one inning all year and gave us a great outing today."
In the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Warriors jumped out to a quick lead after scoring the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Picking up where they left off, the Warriors would add on five more runs over the next two innings as they led 6-1 after three innings.
Upon allowing two runs for the Royals, the Warriors received timely hitting from Starick as he doubled to right center, scoring Takemura and
Will Law as the scoreboard read 8-3 in favor of Jessup headed into the sixth inning.
In the final two innings the Warriors were unable to score any additional runs, but would fend off a late rally and hang on to the victory, 8-6, to sweep day one of the four-game series. The win is now the tenth consecutive for the team as they look to continue their climb up the GSAC standings. Bret Wetteland was the winning pitcher while Fujimoto continued his prolific day as he recorded his fifth save of the season.
Coach Paine said in order to get continue to stack the wins, "It starts on the mound." He continued with, "We need good outings tomorrow and guys to come out of the pen and give us a chance like they did today." Paine finished by saying, "If we can clean up some of the mistakes on defense and get timely hits I like our chance."
The Warriors will return to McBean Park on Thursday afternoon to host the Royals for another doubleheader that is scheduled for an 11:00 AM first pitch.
