Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Warriors show improvement in 3-1 loss

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Just two days after an overtime thriller against Westcliff, the Jessup women's soccer team played their last non-conference match against Dominican as the Penguins took the win 3-1.

On Saturday afternoon Jessup was looking for momentum to build on going into conference play and coach Rachel Moorehead said she saw plenty improvements in her team's overall performance.

"We played like we believed in one another. It was a huge improvement from Thursday. Dominican has only given up one goal this season so to put one in the back of the net was a huge confidence boost," Moorehead said.

From the outset, the Penguins applied offensive pressure on the Warriors backline resulting in a corner kick in the opening minute of play. From there the Warriors were kept on the defensive end as Dominican earned four corner kicks before they found the net in the 24th minute.

On the offensive end for Jessup, Madison Leonhardt got Jessup's first shot on goal in the 19th minute as she missed slightly high.

In the final 15 minutes of the first half, Dominican had three more corner kicks and three shots but goalkeeper Emma Whigam and the Warriors defense held their line.

Jessup went into halftime down 1-0 after Isabel House missed her first shot of the day in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, Dominican struck first with their own offensive attack as they scored in the 54th minute taking a 2-0 lead.

But the Warriors didn't take long to respond as Isabel House connected with Alhan Bakideh for a goal in the 56th minute for her fourth of the season.

Then in the 84th minute, the Penguins found the net for the final time in the match giving them the 3-1 victory.

On the day, Jessup had four shots total with two on goal compared to Dominican's 19 shots and 10 shots on goal. Whigam played all 90 minutes and tallied seven saves.

Moorehead said that while the team gave up three goals, she was encouraged by their play defensively as they improved in some areas Saturday. "Our backline and goalkeeper took our critique from Thursday and came out ready to play as a unit, it was very fulfilling to watch them come together like that."

Jessup returns to the field Thursday at home when they open GSAC play against nationally-ranked Westmont.
