Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Quinton Lilley

Jessup men's soccer grabs 2OT tie at UAV

The Warriors stormed back from a 2-1 deficit in the final minute to earn a tie on the road.

ROCKLIN, Calif - After traveling 400 miles south, the Jessup men's soccer team nearly came away with their first win of the season at the University of Antelope Valley but ultimately earned a 2-2 double-overtime tie Thursday evening.

While the game didn't end as the Warriors (0-1-1) had hoped, head coach Greg Lazaga said there were some positive signs to take away from the match."Our transition was king in this game with clear opportunities missed. However, we took a positive step identifying some of our core values and program playstyles on the field."

The match began rather slowly as neither team scored in the opening 47 minutes until UAV (2-0-1) struck first to kick things off in the second half.

About 20 minutes later at the 65-minute mark, Heriberto Trevino scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 as the Warriors regained momentum.

The match grew increasingly physical with nine yellow cards as the Pioneers were the first to take advantage of the aggressive play with a Jessup foul in the penalty box. The penalty kick  found the back of the net in the 82nd minute

With the Warriors down 2-1 with just over eight minutes left the comeback effort began and was capped off in the 89th minute on a PK by Ioan Muresan as he scored his second goal of the year.

Both teams then battled in overtime for two 10 minute periods as neither team was able to find a final answer. In addition to the four goals that found the net, both teams combined for 47 shots including 20 on goal.

Overall Lazaga said playing against UAV was a good challenge that he hopes prepares his group for conference play going forward. "They have a talented squad this year, I could see them doing well. They also have a very tough place to play, which is why I am proud of our boys for learning from our last game and finding a way to finish even."

The Warriors continue their road trip south as they'll be in Orange County to face Bethesda Saturday at 11 a.m.
