Warriors claim first conference victory in epic five-set battle

The Warriors showed resilience as they hung on to beat the Royals in five sets.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The William Jessup Volleyball team claimed their first conference victory of the season by taking down the Hope International Royals in an epic five-set battle, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 17-25, & 15-12.

Set one for the Warriors didn't go the way they expected as a late run fell short and the Royals took the set 25-21 but the Warriors would keep their heads high and prepare to turn things around in the second set.

After Ashanti Grayer broke a 20-20 tie with a timely kill in the second set, the Warriors jumped ahead and would continue to build off their stellar play as they closed out the set by winning 25-21.

Building off that momentum, the Warriors continued to channel their focus on the task at hand. Late in the third set, Taylor Jacky and Grayer teamed up to score four-consecutive points as Jessup took a commanding 24-17 lead. After a pair of points from the Royals, it was Grayer who registered the sets final kill as the Warriors won it 25-19.

The Warriors were aiming to end the match with a set four victory but after falling behind early, they were unable to rally back and lost set four 25-17. Heading into the last set, Taylor Jacky noted how the team's mood was unphased.

Jacky said, "We do everything with confidence and joy and trust in our amazing coaching staff and each other." She added that "I had full faith in our team, on the court and on the bench, that we could get the win."

The fifth and final set was the closest of the match, as it was tied nine different times and was ultimately decided by three points. After giving up the first two points, the Warriors quickly rallied back with four straight points to take the early lead.

The Royals eventually retook the lead 11-10. However, it was short-lived as the Warriors tied the game for the final time at 12 apiece then proceeded to score the matches final three points to conclude set, 15-12 in Jessup's favor.

After the game, head coach Tiger Shelton was happy with his team's win but noted how each win in conference play will be well earned.

"The GSAC will be a dog fight," Shelton said. "Today we started off a little bit slow and a little gun shy. We are still trying to figure out who we are."

However, he did note that the entire team from the starters to the bench are an excited bunch. "Everybody's fired up, and that's what we need in order to win."

Grayer and Jacky ended the match with new season highs as they tallied 20 and 19 kills respectively. Their stellar play on the attack was set up in large part by Jessica Williams who had a team-high 35 assists along with Brianne Whitt who ended with 18 assists.

Kacey Berger led the Warriors with 25 digs while Jacky and Jessica Williams each had 21. Jessica Williams also had a phenomenal night from the service line as she had four service aces.

The Warriors will hit the road next week as they prepare to take on Vanguard University and San Diego Christian College on September 13th and 14th.
