Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Second half downs the Warriors against No. 4 Westmont

ROCKLIN, Calif. - For the second time in three days the Jessup women's basketball team faced a top-five opponent, and while the Warriors held it down defensively in the first half, they suffered the loss 72-56 to No. 4 Westmont Saturday afternoon at home.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said the second-half push by Westmont was the difference in the game. "It's disappointing to drop a game like this where we controlled a good portion of the of it.  When we had breakdowns Westmont seized on every opportunity especially in the second half."

Westmont (13-2, GSAC 6-0) came into the game averaging over 74 points per game and the Jessup defense did a solid job in the first two quarters holding the road team to just 26 points.

The game began in nip-and-tuck fashion as Westmont quickly took a 4-0 lead but Jessup (10-6,  GSAC 3-2) responded grabbing a 9-7 advantage with 4:56 left in the first. The Warriors continued their momentum from there as JoeLyn Stirton and Liz Gehweiler each scored driving lay-ups on back-to-back possessions giving the home team a 13-9 lead.

Things continued in Jessup's favor when they took a seven-point lead and ultimately clinched a 20-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Juliette Caughey hit her second three of the game and gave Jessup another seven-point lead with 8:55 left. However, over the following four minutes, Westmont responded cutting Jessup's edge down 29-26 with 3:37 left.

From there the Warriors defense took over holding Westmont scoreless as they took a 31-26 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Jessup took a nine-point lead at 38-31 thanks to another lay-in from Stirton, but Westmont went on a 15-3 run grabbing a 46-41 advantage with 3:50 left in the frame.

While Jessup continued to fight, Westmont began to heat up from beyond the arc as they hit three-consecutive three-pointers to end the third taking a 55-48 lead.

The fourth quarter began in Westmont's favor as the road team went on a 7-0 run pushing their advantage up to 14 as Jessup was never able to get the game back into single digits.

Westendorp said while there were positives from the loss, his team will need to make some improvements quickly. "This team is making progress but we need to take our game to a higher level to win these types of games."

Jessup's first-half defense held Westmont to just 27-percent from the field but the road team turned things around in the second half as they shot just under 55-percent in the final 20 minutes.  Overall the home Warrior's offense struggled to catch a rhythm shooting just 33-percent from the field to go along with 25-percent from beyond the arc.

Individually Creonah Bryant led the Warriors with her first double-double of the season as she poured in 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gehweiler followed Bryant with 12 and Miranda Zaragoza also had a solid game with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Jessup will face another top-five opponent when they travel to face No. 5 Vanguard Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
