LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup baseball returned to McBean Park for a midweek game against the 19th ranked Lewis-Clark State College. The Warriors had a successful weekend with a strong offensive presence, but that momentum seemed to slow as they were unable to take down Lewis- Clark. The Warriors lost, 8-1, to give them a 4-1 record overall.
Jessup got off to an early start in the bottom of the first with a single up the middle by
Anders Green to bring in
Kawaiola Takemura, but that would be the last run the Warriors could get on the board.
Head coach,
Trevor Paine, reflected on the offensive struggle after the game, "There are going to be days like this throughout the season where you beat yourself a little bit and can't seem to find ways to string runs together
Paine was impressed with his pitching staff, "I thought guys like
Max Moreno and
Nolan Murphy were very good out of the bullpen. Tipton showed he can pitch out of a jam." Seven Jessup pitchers put in work for the Warriors.
Jared Tippit took the mound for two innings of work before
Dylan Remahl came in for the top of the third. Remahl was in for two-thirds of an inning before
Nolan Murphy took over to end the inning.
Max Moreno made his appearance in the top of the fifth and had a strong final line, allowing no runs and earning three strikeouts. The Warriors sent Tipton out in the seventh inning and then
Isaiah Rodriguez in the eighth.
Josh Hook closed it out for the Warriors.
Takemura finished 2-for-4 on the day while
Kevin Jordan Jr. and
Anders Green were 1-for-3 each. The Warriors finished with two errors, five hits, and seven players left on base, while Lewis-Clark had no errors, 11 hits, and 11 left on base.
"All credit goes to Lewis-Clark State they played a great game on all sides of the ball. They are a really good team and against good teams, you have to play clean baseball. They capitalized on some mistakes we made which put us in a difficult hole to crawl out of." Paine expects to put in some work based on the lessons learned from Lewis-Clark State, "I did have some very positive takeaways from the game. Even though it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard, we had some really good at-bats throughout the game. We hit some balls hard and [Lewis-Clark] made some good plays. We know baseball in its simplest form can be broken down to throwing strikes, playing catch, and taking quality at-bats. We will work to clean up all those areas as we look forward to our first road trip of the season this weekend."
The Warriors head to Idaho for a four-game series against the College of Idaho Yotes. The first double-header starts at 10:00 AM in Caldwell, ID on January 31st before taking the field again on February 1st. Jessup returns to McBean February 7th to face-off against Oregon Tech.
