Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Willis leads Jessup to a fourth-consecutive win

Willis earned her first double-double of the year after a strong first half against LPU.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - After a weekend sweep of the Arizona schools, the Jessup women's basketball team continued their winning ways Thursday night with a 74-52 win over Life Pacific.

The Warriors  (14-7, 7-3 ) got off to a fantastic start led by Aycee Willis who scored 10 of her game-high 23 points in the opening frame. That start proved to be the difference and coach Kurt Westendorp praised his team for their effort.

"We brought great energy on both ends of the floor tonight especially to start the game. We set out to make that the staple of this game and I'm proud of the way we brought it for 40 minutes."

In the opening frame, the Warriors quickly grabbed a 13-3 lead after a three from Juliette Caughey, then Miranda Zaragoza closed out the quarter on a strong note scoring on three consecutive possessions giving Jessup a 21-8 lead.

The second quarter started just like the first as Jessup went on an 8-0 run pushing their lead up to 29-11 forcing a timeout with 6:24 left in the frame. After holding LPU to just eight points in the opening 10 minutes, Jessup's defense continued in the second quarter as they allowed just 11 points as Zaragoza had three blocks by halftime.

Heading into the locker room Jessup led 41-19.

In the third quarter, LPU did a better job defensively against the Jessup attack holding them to a game-low 16 points but the Warriors still led 57-29 after outscoring the road team by six.

In the fourth, while LPU scored a game-high 23 points, Jessup had an answer for each run they made as the lead never got lower than 21 and the Warriors went on to win their fourth consecutive game.

Jessup dominated inside the paint as they outscored Life Pacific 40-8 while also scoring 27 points on second-chance opportunities. The Warriors effort on the glass broke the previous school record for rebounds as the Jessup grabbed 68 in total.

Westendorp spoke to his teams' ability to score inside, "We did an excellent job controlling the paint on both ends with our scoring and rebounding. To more than double them up on the boards is a dominant stat."

Individually Willis wasn't just a scorer, she also grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Zaragoza also continued her strong play with 19 points and 17 rebounds including nine on the offensive glass.

The Warriors also had some key contributions off the bench as Leah Richardson scored a season-high nine points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Caitlin Bowman also had a nice game finishing with seven points and five rebounds.

Jessup will look to complete the weekend sweep Saturday at noon when they face Hope International in Warrior Arena.

Westendorp said his team will need all hands on deck to continue their winning streak, "It was great to see contributions from up and down our line up tonight. I hope this goes a long way to fueling a strong second round of GSAC play."
