Warriors Extinguish Flames in Season-Opening 93-27 Win

Jessup sets new single-game assist record in route to Planells first victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Warriors took the court for the first time this season, hosting Bethesda University in the fifteenth annual Bill Holtz Classic. In dominating fashion, the Warriors kept their foot on the gas all game en route to a record-setting 93-27 win.

Head coach Hernando Planells, coaching his first official game with the Warriors, noted that coming away with a win in his first game "Feels amazing."

Planells quickly added that "It is more of the work these ladies have done for the last two months." He continued by praising their "dedication to the program and the culture" they are building here at Jessup.

Warriors Set Program Assists Record

As seen by the score, the Warriors had no problem scoring primarily due to their efficient ball movement. Every player who stepped foot on the court for the Warriors recorded at least one assist to their name. Senior Katie Campana led the way with nine, while JoeLyn Stirton, Bobbie Purify, and Maila Lepolo all had four.

In total, the Warriors set a new record by tallying a total of 30 assists by the time the final buzzer sounded. The previous record of 27 was established in December of 2007 against former Cal Pac rival, Pacific Union College.

Four Players in Double Figures

With the great passing on display from the Warriors, four different players ended in double figures. Leading the way in the scoring department was senior Miranda Zaragoza as she routinely established her dominating presence down low to the tune of 22 points and ten rebounds.

Close behind Zaragoza was freshman Paige Winter as she totaled 21 points in her collegiate debut to pair with seven rebounds. Regarding his two post players, head coach Hernando Planells shared that "(Winter) is just so strong. It's great having her and (Zaragoza) play off each other."

Also scoring the rock with efficiency was Lepolo who added to her line 16 points, and four steals. Aycee Willis came off the bench and was an impact player right away, and she ended with 13 points, four steals, and four rebounds.

Next On The Schedule

With a break now between games, the Warriors are slated to take the court next on November 27 at the University of Nevada. Jessup is currently not scheduled to play in Warrior Arena again until mid-December. Jessupathletics.com will have updates on any additions made to the schedule as they happen.
