RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Jessup faced their second consecutive Division I opponent Tuesday Morning, losing to California Baptist University 91-62. In game one of Jessup's current five-game road trip, the Warriors were met with a stout opponent picked to win the Western Athletic Conference while boasting the preseason player of the year in Ane Olaeta.
Zaragoza Continues To Shine
Despite playing another NCAA Division I team, senior
Miranda Zaragoza continues to showcase her talents game in and game out. Zaragoza notched 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field while also pulling down six rebounds.
In the Warriors' previous game, Zaragoza became the second Warriors player to join the 1,000 point club. As the season moves on, especially with more games in the coming days, the Warriors will lean heavily on the senior's leadership.
Head coach
Hernando Planells likes where Zaragoza's game is at, saying, "Miranda does a great job of getting great position on the block." He added, "She runs the floor well and shows relentless attitude toward attacking the basket."
Success In Second and Fourth Quarter
It was a tough opening frame for the Warriors, but the team stayed the course and played a terrific second quarter to close out the first half. Overall, Jessup matched the Lancers 18 points in the second, with
Maila Lepolo and the aforementioned Zaragoza each posting six points in the frame.
Again, in the fourth quarter, the Warriors showcased their talent as they outscored CBU by five points, 19-14. The last quarter was a great display of team basketball as six different Warriors scored off of seven assists.
Overall the Warriors had a nose for the ball as they outrebounded their opponent 50-46. The ball movement from Jessup was effective, with 17 assists in total.
A Look Ahead
Next up on the schedule, the Warriors will continue their road trip as they head to Cedar City to play Southern Utah University on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Southern Utah has only played one game thus far, losing to Utah Valley 58-47.
Coach Planells said, "It's a great test for us because we are playing back-to-back in less than thirty hours." He ended with, "We need to continue to strengthen our focus and intentionality on and off the court."
