Warriors Win Season-First Road Series

Duran’s eight stolen bases drives Warrior offense

CALDWELL, Idaho – The road Warriors found themselves with a bittersweet Friday doubleheader against the College of Idaho Yotes and sought to turn things around Saturday with the series tied 1–1. The weekend ended with the Warriors winning the series and bringing home a 7-2 record.

"It's always good to win a series on the road and it's not easy to do," head coach Trevor Paine said. "College of Idaho was a tough opponent and they always seemed to string together quality at-bats down the stretch, so we are happy to be able to come up here and win a series."

Game 1: Jessup 9, College of Idaho 6

The Warriors were ready as they stepped onto the field, scoring early in the top of the first off of a ground ball from Jordan Yu. In the third inning, a fielder's choice brought in Kawaiola Takemura, and Anders Green scored on an error by the Yotes and with two runners in scoring position, Jesus Duran singled to shallow right-center to push the Warriors lead, 4-0.

The fourth inning saw two more runs for the Warriors with an RBI triple off the bat of Mike Shoenberger followed by a single from Yu to bring Shoenberger home, 6-1. The Yotes were able to tie it up in the bottom of the sixth, but Takemura hit a double in the top of the eighth to take back the lead. The Warriors added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, securing a 9-6 victory.

Kristian Hernandez started on the bump for the Warriors before Brett Wetteland came in for the Warriors in the sixth inning and closed out the game. Wetteland earned the win during his four scoreless innings of work allowing just two hits and three strikeouts.

Game 2: Jessup 9, College of Idaho 7

The momentum found in-game one continued in game two for the Warriors as Shoenberger hit a three-run homer over the left-field fence. The College of Idaho answered with a run, but the Warriors were quick to reply. Jessup added four runs in the top of the second, two of which were off of a double from Kevin Jordan Jr. to deep left-center. Then, in the top of the third, Anthony Masetti increased the Warriors lead with an RBI single to left-center, 8-1.

The Yotes were able to add a few more runs in the third and fourth, but the Warriors' pitching staff held them off. Jordan Jr. added Jessup's final run to the board in the top of the sixth, 9-4. The Yotes responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Warriors' pitching prevailed, giving Jessup the win, 9-7.

Jessup sent Brad Jones out to start game two before Max Moreno (2-0) relieved in the second to collect his second win. Moreno had four innings of work and gave up just seven hits, three runs, and one walk with four strikeouts. Justin Culligan came in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth for three batters before Jared Tippit for a third of an inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Yu came in to close it out and earn his second save of the series.

The Warriors showed their base running skills with eight stolen bases on the day, five from Duran. Shoenberger led the Warriors at the plate, going five-for-nine, while Green and Jordan, Jr. were close behind with 4-for-8 on the day. The Warriors had 21 hits and left 17 players stranded while the College of Idaho posted 22 hits and left 15 on base.

Paine said, "It took contributions from several different guys today. Hernandez and Wetteland were very good today and were able to pitch around some mistakes we made defensively.  In game two, Moreno was very good in his outing and Culligan and Tippit did a great job pitching through the heart of their order. "

On Friday, February 7th, the Warriors return to McBean Park to play a doubleheader against Oregon Tech at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
