Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Quinton Lilley

Second half push leads Jessup to victory over SDC

Liz Gehweiler led all scorers with 19 points.

ROCKLIN, Calif. - With just two games left at home and conference tournament seeding up for grabs, the Jessup women's basketball team used a dominant second-half push to win 73-43 over San Diego Christian on #Play4Kay night Thursday evening.

The Warriors (17-9, 10-5) outscored the Hawks 47-23 in the second half and used a balanced attack most of the game.

Coach Kurt Westendorp said the team's continuity is coming in to form nicely since the start of the month. "We have been starting to hit a good rhythm offensively with our chemistry. Our girls are getting a great feel for how to play connected and it's really starting to show."

The game began at a relatively slow pace as neither team was able to find their rhythm offensively. At the 4:01 mark of the frame, Miranda Zaragoza scored on a lay-up giving Jessup a five-point lead but the Hawks hung in nicely as Jessup led 12-8 at the end of one.

While the Warriors offense was off to an uneasy start Westendorp said his team's defense led the way. "We did a good job defensively all night long but especially in the first half when our offense was a little off-kilter."

The second quarter provided a little more offense but neither team was able to take control of the momentum as the Warriors outscored SDC 14-12. Liz Gehweiler and Aycee Willis led Jessup as the duo combined for 11 points.

During the second quarter, the Warriors looked like they were going to blow the game open when they took a 12-point lead with 2:44 left but SDC responded nicely with a 6-0 run to close the half.

Heading to the break, Jessup led 26-20.

Midway through the third quarter, Jaqueline Magana got a spinning lay-in to fall giving Jessup a 10-point lead at 37-27. The Warriors went on to hold the double-digit lead by the end of the frame thanks to a three from Gehweiler, a long two from Elizabeth Roark, and a jumper at the buzzer from Caitlin BowmanThe Warriors then found themselves ahead 44-32 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The fourth quarter proved to be the most dominant frame for Jessup as they scored a game-high 29 points including nine from JoeLyn Stirton, another eight from Creonah Bryant, and Gehweiler capped off her strong game with seven.

The Warriors took a 20-point advantage at the 8:03 mark and never looked back as they went on to win by 30.

Gehweiler led all scorers with 19, Bryant added 17, and Willis added 13. The Warriors also dominated points off turnovers as they outscored SDC 20-3 in that category.

The team will return to Horton Court for the final time this season on Saturday for Senior Day which tips off at 12 p.m. against No. 6 Vanguard.

Westendorp also added "Saturday is a great opportunity for us to send our seniors off with one last win on Horton Court. Vanguard presents a tough test but I know we will be focused and ready to meet the challenge."
