Warriors down Firestorm behind Zaragoza’s career night

Zaragoza, Bryant combine for 44 points in win

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Jessup's first stop in Arizona was a success as two starters contributed more than half of their total points. Miranda Zaragoza set a career high in points with 27 to go along with 16 rebounds and Creonah Bryant contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds.

These two performances fueled the Warriors (18-10, 11-6) as they led wire-to-wire over Arizona Christian (10-18, 6-11), winning 72-54. With the win, Jessup swept the season series against the Firestorm.

Coach Kurt Westendorp was pleased with the play of his two starters saying, "Cree and Miranda really worked hand-in-hand today in our offense. Those two have developed a decent chemistry in our zone offense where they get a lot of opportunities."

The Warriors also dominated the glass as they out-rebounded ACU 52-35.

Westendorp commented on the importance of winning this battle saying, "Controlling the boards the way we did tonight really gives us some wiggle room when we didn't shoot the ball well early. Our energy to get second and third chances really set the tone in the first half."

Jessup opened the game on an 8-0 run and continued their hot start as Aycee Willis connected on a three-pointer.

Juliette Caughey checked into the game and found the bottom of the net on a three with 2:55 remaining. The Warriors won the opening quarter 18-12.

Jessup embarked on a 9-2 run to begin the second quarter which included a possession with precision passing as everyone touched the ball before Bryant found Zaragoza for a wide-open layup. The Warriors led 27-14 with 5:24 to play in the period.

From there, Jessup went 6-6 from the free-throw line to close out the half and led 33-21.

Coming out of halftime, Bryant contributed six points in less than four minutes to increase Jessup's lead to 13. Later on, Bryant found Caughey for a three and the Warriors held a 45-36 advantage with 3:07 to play in the quarter.

Jessup closed the period on a 9-2 run and led 54-38 heading into the final frame.

Caughey connected on her third triple of the night at the 9:24 mark in the fourth quarter and the Warriors went up by 17.

Then, Bryant proceeded to net three jumpers in a row to give Jessup a 24 point lead with 5:09 remaining.

The Warriors ran away down the stretch, winning 72-54.

Zaragoza led all scorers with 27, Bryant added 17, and Caughey contributed nine off the bench.

Westendorp applauded his team's defensive effort as they held ACU to 30-percent shooting saying, "This was one of our better games communicating on the court. I feel like when we play connected we force teams into some really tough shots, and that was the case tonight."

The Warriors will look to earn a win in their final game of the regular season at OUAZ on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
