Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Carson

Short-handed Warriors drop season finale

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Saturday's match-up at OUAZ was Jessup's final stop on their annual two-game Arizona road trip and even though the Warriors controlled the game in the first half, it wasn't enough as they fell 97-86.

With the loss, Jessup (18-12, 10-8) split the season series with the Spirit (11-17, 6-12).

In a game that saw main contributors sidelined due to injury, Coach Lance Von Vogt applauded the effort of his reserves, "They say injuries are the great equalizer and there's truth to that. We were missing six key guys today that didn't dress due to injury. The reserves stepped up and played well, but we weren't able to put forty minutes of basketball together."

The Warriors scored their first nine points on threes as Jayden DeJoseph, Jaydon Clark, and Matt Lyon connected from deep. Jessup was tied with OUAZ at nine apiece with 17:12 remaining in the half.

From there, the road team embarked on a 13-6 run to lead 22-15 at the 11-minute mark.

Jessup was able to extend the lead to double-digits thanks to back-to-back layups from Lyon and a three from Clark. Austin Dill converted on a layup and the Warriors led 40-25 with 2:05 to play in the half.

As the buzzer sounded, Jessup held a 40-31 advantage heading into the locker room.

Von Vogt commented on his team's first half effort saying, "I was very happy in how we executed offensively and defensively in the first half. We controlled the pace and tempo which allowed us to limit their big three and get good shots on our end."

The second half proved to be a different story as OUAZ hit 14 of their first 15 field goal attempts along with five free-throws to go up 66-53 with 11:26 remaining.

This was all-part of a 37-15 OUAZ run over the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Spirit led 68-55.

Jessup wouldn't go away though as Luis Medearis scored five-straight points followed by a Wilson LaShells layup and DeJoseph three-pointer and the Warriors trailed by just nine with 7:45 to play.

Medearis added two more free-throws to pull Jessup within seven, but that was as close as the game would get as OUAZ held on down the stretch to win 97-86.

Medearis led Jessup in scoring with 28, Dill added 16, Clark posted 12, and Lyon and DeJoseph each contributed 11.

The Warriors are locked in as the No. 5 seed in the GSAC tournament next weekend at Westmont. Opponent and time is TBA.
