Jessup Tennis competes in first ever double-header

SDC match was moved forward due to weather forecasts

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - In what was a first for Jessup tennis, the Warriors competed in a double-header on Friday against Hope International and San Diego Christian due to weather forecasts.

Match One: Hope International 7, Jessup 0

The number one and two doubles teams lost both of their matches (6-0, 6-0) but it was in singles play that Coach Jon Toney said, "The team fought back and competed extremely well."

In number one singles McKenzie Hawkins went deep in the first set, winning five games before ultimately falling (7-5, 6-3).

Toney acknowledged Hawkins' efforts saying, "McKenzie had an excellent opportunity to win the first set and continues to play high caliber tennis against the opposing school's top player."

Stephanie Alsman and Melisa Hansen lost their singles matches with scores of (6-1, 6-1) and (6-2, 6-2) respectively.

Karen Godinez-Ramos, who played number four singles, won three games in her first set before falling (6-3, 6-1).

Toney commented on her performance saying, "Karen had many excellent points in her match and is making great progress from high school to collegiate-caliber tennis."

Match Two: San Diego Christian 4, Jessup 0

The Warriors faced off against the Hawks in the back-half of the double-header, which also proved to be their first night match in program history.

Toney again complimented his players on their singles performance saying, "Our singles players raised their level of play against SDC, which will likely be a top-five team in the nation when the next poll is announced."

Concerning Hawkins' singles play, Toney said, "She pushed All- American Sarah Urbanek to the limit in a hard-fought match."

Hawkins indeed put forth a strong effort, winning four games in each set before dropping them (6-4, 6-4).

Toney also commented on the play of Alsman and Hansen saying, "Alsman hit a service ace to hold serve, and Hansen had long rallies that will build her confidence as the team enters the second half of the season."

Alsman and Hansen both lost their singles matches (6-1, 6-1).

Jessup will return to action at home against Arizona Christian on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m.
