Late-inning Rally Splits the Series for the Warriors

Green’s grand slam gives Warriors the advantage over the Mustangs

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – After splitting the Friday doubleheader, the Warriors returned to Reese Field hoping to win the series against The Master's University Mustangs. The Saturday doubleheader was split as the Warriors dropped game one but rallied their offense to take game two. The tied series takes the Warriors to 18-11 overall, 7-7 in GSAC.

Game 1: Master's 10, Jessup 6

The Warriors came to the plate ready and got baserunners quickly. That momentum earned Jessup the early lead as Joseph Luevano singled to right field to score two. Kawaiola Takemura followed up with a double that allowed Luevano to score, 3-0. The Mustangs answered with four runs in the bottom of the second, but Mike Shoenberger tied it up with a home run in the top of the third.

The Master's took the lead in the bottom of the fourth and extended it with five more runs in late innings. Despite a ninth-inning two-RBI single from Kevin Gutierrez, the Warriors fell, 10-6.

Kristian Hernandez started on the bump for the Warriors and put in two innings of work before Isaiah Rodriguez took over. Rodriguez faced 21 batters in his time on the mound, giving up just four hits, four runs, one walk, and one strikeout. Then, in the seventh inning, Nolan Murphy took over to get the last out. Jared Tippit came in the bottom of the eight to close it out.

Game 2: Jessup 10, Master's 8

Both Jessup and Master's pitching staff dominated the early innings of game two, but the Mustangs were the first on the board in the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors were quick to respond as Anders Green hit an RBI double down the left field line. Jesus Duran followed it up with an RBI single to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs put up three in the bottom of the fifth, but the Warriors had found their spark.

In the top of the sixth, a rally started and Luevano hit a bases-loaded RBI single. An error by the Mustangs brought in Gutierrez before Green topped things off with a grand slam, 8-4. The seventh inning brought the Warriors a walked in run and then a Takemura RBI single for some extra insurance. The Mustangs were unable to close the deficit and the Warriors won, 10-8.

"I was happy with how we responded in game two to come away with a split," stated head coach Trevor Paine. "It's always tough to win on the road and it took a great effort by our offense late in the game to put up some crooked numbers."

Freshman lefty, Max Moreno earned his sixth win of the season as he went five innings for the Warriors. Paine praised his pitching staff's tenacity, "Moreno was solid again on the mound and gave us a chance to win and Wetteland slammed the door overcoming some defensive mistakes." Moreno only gave up four hits, four runs, one walk, and took four strikeouts before Brett Wetteland came in to close.

Green's grand slam earned him the leading spot in RBIs with five on the day, but Luevano (4) and Takemura (3) were close on his heels. Takemura, however, led in batting average as he went 4-for-9. Luevano went 2-for-5 and Green was 3-for-7.

The Warriors face San Diego Christian College at McBean Park on March 13th and 14th. Games start at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
