Warriors complete weekend sweep of Spirit, defeat OUAZ 68-40

Every Warrior Scores as Jessup improves to 6-0 all-time against OUAZ

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Less than 24 hours after topping OUAZ 78-56, the Jessup women's basketball team delivered another stifling defensive performance to defeat the Spirit 68-40. In Friday's matchup, Jessup held OUAZ to 26.2% field-goal-shooting and improved upon that mark Saturday, as the Spirit shot just 25% from the floor.

Coach Hernando Planells commented on his team's defensive effort saying, "Our girls play really hard, so anytime we sub we do a great job of getting ball pressure and winning those 50-50 balls and rebounds."

The Warriors came out hot from the jump as Paige Winter connected on a three-pointer off of a Shaylin Sande assist. A few minutes later, Sande took a pass from Akilah Watson and knocked down a three of her own. As the opening frame came to a close, Cheyenne Jankulovski drove into the lane and euro-stepped into a left-handed layup to put the Warriors ahead 19-12.

Maila Lepolo and Katie Campana began the second quarter with back-to-back floaters in the lane to give Jessup a 24-12 advantage with 8:11 remaining in the half. The Warriors continued their strong defensive effort by holding OUAZ to just eight points in the quarter for the second consecutive game and led 37-20 at the half.

Jessup opened the second half with a Miranda Zaragoza layup made possible off of a dime by Juliette Caughey. Winter continued her volume scoring by converting consecutive layups and the Warriors led 49-23 at the 3:40 mark. By quarter's end, Jessup had held OUAZ to just five points in the frame and took a 51-25 lead into the final period.

At the 4:22 mark in the fourth, Watson drove right and scored plus the foul, showcasing her finishing ability in the lane. With just under a minute left, Jennifer Pedretti saw her midrange jumper bounce in, signaling that every Warrior had scored.

Planells commented on the balanced scoring effort saying, "Anytime everyone can produce, it's a true testament to how hard they work. The players have been super dedicated all year long to get extra shots in and it's showing."

In the 28-point victory, Paige Winter led the way with 18 points off the bench, followed by JoeLyn Stirton with seven, and Watson with six. The Warriors outscored OUAZ 44-27 in bench points.

Jessup will look to carry this weekend's momentum into next as they travel to Santa Clarita to take on The Master's. Tip off is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5.
