REDDING, Calif. - A new season of Jessup Volleyball is officially underway as the Warriors hit the road Saturday to take on the Simpson Red Hawks. Jessup got out of Redding quickly, winning in a clean sweep, three sets to none.
"All things considered, I thought we played really well," said Head Coach
Tiger Shelton after the match. "The younger players really stepped up their game, and they didn't play like freshmen. They played like they've been there forever."
The first two sets of Saturday's action looked identical, with the two sides trading point-for-point in the early going. Jessup sat tied at 13 apiece in set one before finally putting their foot on the gas to take the opener 25-16.
Again, in set two, the Warriors found themselves all square at 13-13. Jessup went on an offensive charge in this set's midway point, scoring nine of 11 points as they pulled ahead by six. They would take the set by a 25-18 final.
Set three was much quicker than the first two, as the Warriors carried that late momentum in with them en route to a 25-13 win. Jessup scored 11 of the first 15 points in this set.
"Overall, it was a great team effort," added Shelton, who is in his second season leading the Warriors.
"Our bench was really solid, not just the people that went in, but the people that were not in, just being a part of keeping the program moving forward. They didn't let down."
In the box score, it was freshman
Mary Padilla leading the way for Jessup with seven kills. The Warriors were excellent on the serve in this game, with freshman
Taylor MacCuish totaling five aces in the winning effort. Jessup had 15 total aces in this one.
"Mary Padilla really had a breakout day for a freshman," said Shelton. "Everybody else played solid around her. The setters did good. Everything went well!"
Next up for comes the home opener for the Warriors as they welcome Oregon Tech on February 6. While no fans are allowed in attendance, a live stream of the game will be available HERE.
