Saturday’s Matinee Tips in Vanguard’s Favor, 4-0

Warriors will compete in their final road match of the season next Saturday when they take on Hope International in Fullerton

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Jessup took the field on Saturday looking to clean up on their errors from previous matches. With the current top-dog in the GSAC, the (RV) Vanguard Lions, in town, Jessup could not combat the early strikes from their opponent.

After the match, Head Coach Greg Lazaga stated, "Vanguard is a good side that punished us for simple mistakes early.  I believe they had three or four shots and were able to connect on three of them early."

It did not take long for the Lions to get on the scoreboard, as less than two minutes into the match, Vanguard converted on a free kick twenty yards out. Just under seven minutes later, the Lions were at it again, scoring their second goal within the first ten minutes of the match.

The Warriors were not passive in the opening half, as they outshot the Lions 10-9. However, only two of those opening half shots for the Warriors went on frame.

Lazaga spoke on the Warriors' shot count early on, adding, "On our side, I thought we moved the ball well east to west and into good spots in their half, but we are still missing the confidence to finish plays and runs. Our shot total proves that."

Vanguard would score again in the 25th minute, pushing their lead to 3-0.

The Warriors made a change at goalkeeper in the second half, as freshman Juan Negrete played the final 45 minutes. The freshman flashed, making several key saves to keep his side in the game.

Negrete closed the match with a career-high four saves.

The only goal Negrete allowed came on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute, putting the score at its eventual final, 4-0.

Lazaga offered praise for several Warriors, noting that "Isaac Morfin, Diego Nunez, Paolo Ionescu, and Angelo Chavez are learning so much, and I am excited about their futures together. Donovan Carrillo and Rahil Shankar were a great tandem today in the back, Donovan disruptive and connecting forward and Rahil breaking up plays for Vanguard consistently."

"There were a lot of teachable and positive moments to continue to build on."

Jessup will embark on their final road trip of the season next week as they hit the road for Fullerton to take on Hope International next Saturday.
