OAKLAND, Calif. – The week ahead has a different look for the Warriors than it did Monday morning. Thanks to a last-minute addition to the schedule, the Warriors were in Oakland Thursday, earning a year-ending victory with a 74-46 showing at Holy Names University.
Thursday's trip was a late gift for the Warriors, as Head Coach
Corey Laster added the matchup on Monday due to Holy Names' scheduled game with Cal Maritime being canceled. Cancellations are something the Warriors know well, as Thursday started with news that their Friday matchup with Simpson would no longer be happening.
"I'm glad we had a game to play," said Laster. "We're still growing as a team, and what better way to get back at it than just playing some games."
A balanced attack for the Warriors saw new faces lead the scoring. Shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field,
Bobbie Purify led the way with 14. Right behind her was
Cheyenne Jankulovski, scoring 13 on a 6-of-8 showing from the floor.
The Warriors were prolific shooting as a team, connecting on 48-percent of the shots, including a 40-percent (8-of-20) from 3-point range.
Laster liked the way his team made adjustments mid-game in this one, adding, "We're constantly adjusting to girls different roles and what may be expected, and I thought we did a good job of actually making changes on the fly."
Jessup jumped out to an early lead in this one, taking a four-point lead into the second quarter. The Warriors then stepped on the gas, outscoring Holy Names 19-8 in the second to push their advantage to 15.
Quarter three saw the Warriors put the game entirely out of reach, as the lead reached 23 with just 10 minutes to go.
Another Warrior contributing to the scoring column was
Juliette Caughey. Caughey had yet to hit double-digits this season, but that cannot be said anymore as she scored 11 on 4-of-6 shooting.
"I thought Juliette had some good moments before the (Christmas) break," added Laster on Caughey. "That led to her getting some more minutes. Coaching her, she really hasn't changed/ I think her leadership is so valuable."
Jennifer Pedretti was reinserted to the starting lineup for this one. She added seven.
Thursday's victory comes over a team from the NCA Division II ranks, as the Warriors are amidst a break in the GSAC season. Jessup moves up to 8-9 on the season.
The conference break is now officially over, as next on the schedule is a trip to Santa Barbara to take on the defending NAIA National Champions, Westmont. Westmont comes into the game ranked second in the country.
After the trip to Westmont, the Warriors will visit The Master's University. TMU is also sitting in the top-10, ranked at No. 8.
