REDDING, Calif. – The Warriors remained in Redding for a double-dose of games against the No. 1 ranked Southern Oregon University Raiders and the (RV) Simpson University Red Hawks. The Warriors split their games today as they defeated SOU in game one but then dropped game two against Simpson.
Head coach
Brie Campbell was proud of how her team competed, saying, "Today we executed from the start, and we proved that we can compete against top competitors." She went on to praise her team by adding, "
Terra Goetz got it done in the circle in game one, and our offense saw the ball well."
It took a little bit of time for the Warriors to get their bats going in game one, but
Terra Goetz, who was pitching, remained lights out. Through three innings, her steady play kept things even with no runs on the board for either team.
The first run for Jessup came from
Mehana Johns via a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. Then, in the fifth,
Hailey Hiett knocked in two more runs with a double.
Sam Lorge then continued the stellar fourth inning with an RBI base hit.
The Raiders were able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Warrior defense stood firm as Jessup took down the nation's top-ranked team.
Game two started with
Seli Aholelei scoring the first run as she stole home in the top of the first inning.
Kayla Altheide kept things rolling for the Warriors with a towering shot over the left-field fence, giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Simpson then scored in the sixth, but Lorge knocked in another run in the top of the seventh with another RBI base hit.
The game started to unravel in the bottom of the seventh, and the Warriors were unable to hang on for the win. In regards to game two, Campbell said, "We had an early lead and were able to bring a couple runs in with big hits from
Kayla Altheide and
Sam Lorge. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks do well under pressure and were able to pull it out in the final inning."
Campbell ended with, "We look forward to continuing a competitive non-conference lineup to prepare us for GSAC play."
Jessup softball will head back home and prepare to host Oregon Tech on Friday, February 19.
