Softball Shuts-Out No. 17 Yotes In Doubleheader Split

Goetz tosses a complete-game shutout in game two; Warriors knock off second top-25 team in past five days

LINCOLN, Calif. –  With a duo of ranked teams in town, Jessup Softball took the field Friday afternoon to face (RV) Oregon Tech and (17) The College of Idaho. After a late surge gave OIT the win in game one, the Warriors fought a tight battle in game two, shutting out the Yotes 1-0.

Overall on the day, Head Coach Brie Campbell said, "Today we came out strong in both contests and continued to compete against top teams with solid defense and offensive play."

After a scoreless start to game one, the Owls were the first ones on the board as they put up two runs. The Warriors, however, with timely hits coupled with errors from the Owls, were able to take the lead, 3-2.

Over the next two innings, both defenses played solid as the score remained the same. OIT was able to get runners in scoring position in the fifth inning, and they took advantage as they tied things up at three runs apiece. Entering the seventh inning tied up, the Warriors went on to lose 3-7 as the Owls hit a pair of two-run homers.

In regards to game one, Campbell said, "We battled hard all game but were unable to counter the final inning attack by Oregon Tech."

Terra Goetz handled business in the circle in the second game, and after a one-two-three opening inning defensively, the Warriors jumped out in front. In the leadoff spot, Seli Aholelei reached on a bunt down the first base line. A couple of batters later, with two outs, Mehana Johns doubled down the left-field line, plating Aholelei.

The RBI-double from Johns proved to be the difference offensively as it was the only run scored. On the flip side, Goetz handled her business all night long, only allowing two hits.

Campbell continued by saying, "Terra pitched lights out against a very strong team. Offensively we again attacked early, and we were able to ride that for a big win." Campbell ended with, "We're looking forward to another pair tomorrow to continue the momentum that started today."

The win pushes Jessup to 4-7 on the season. All four of Jessup's victories have come against nationally-ranked opponents.

Jessup will be back on the field tomorrow to play College of Idaho at noon, followed by a 4 p.m. first pitch against Oregon Tech. The games can be streamed HERE.
