Late Surge for an Equalizer Ends in a 2-1 Loss

Leonhardt scores her first goal of the season; Jessup to host Simpson this Friday

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - In a unique non-conference game against a fellow GSAC school, the Warriors hit the field Monday to take on The Master's University. After several late pushes to find an equalizer, Jessup fell on the wrong side of a 2-1 final.

The Warriors started the game out on the right note, as in just the seventh minute, Madison Leonhardt found the back of the net for her first goal of the year. Jessup's early 1-0 lead was their first lead held this season.

Just over ten minutes later, the Mustangs found an equalizer as Anya Garcia netted her first goal of the year. The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead three minutes later off a goal from Elizabeth Radmilovich.

"We started off on the front foot and controlled the first ten minutes, but then we went away from what was working and allowed them back into the game," Head Coach David Nolan said postgame of his team's performance.

The Warriors made repeated charges in the second half to equalize the game. Their closest chance came in the 76th minute after a yellow card issued to the Mustangs gave Jessup a free-kick just outside the box. Nadia Vazquez stepped up to take it, but her shot sailed high.

More late pushes came, as passes through the Mustangs' backline went just a little too far as the goalkeeper was able to come out and collect the ball before a shot could occur. Jessup had a great opportunity on goal in the game's final seconds, but it was denied as the referee's flag signaled offsides.

One final run was made with ten seconds left, as a one-on-one opportunity at goal developed, but the pass to set up a tying chance went too long.

"The second half, I feel we controlled from beginning to the end," added Nolan. We just let ourselves down with our execution in the final third."

Making another start in goal for the Warriors Monday was Emma Whigam. Whigam settled down nicely after the two first half goals, as she allowed no goals off of the Mustang's six second half shots. Overall, Whigam finished with two saves.

"We have been getting better every game, the ladies are starting to create an identity," added Nolan, now three games into his Jessup tenure. "We just need to put it all together and we will start seeing the results"

The break between games will not be long, as Jessup will be on their home turf Friday against Simpson University. Kick off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
