Baseball Split Doubleheader at TMU, Ending the Program’s Best Win-Streak to Start a Season

Warriors pushed their win streak to seven games before the game two loss; Takemura adds four hits and three runs scored

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Warriors were in Santa Clarita for a rare non-conference series against The Master's University. After taking game one of the doubleheader, Jessup would go on to suffer their first loss of the young season.

Getting the nod for game one was senior Danny Chavez. After a great Jessup debut last weekend, Chavez shined again as he lasted seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He also struck out six batters.

"Danny was great again," said Head Coach Trevor Paine on his senior ace. "Once he got settled into the game, he and Joseph Luevano had a really good plan on how to attack each hitter and he executed his plan well."

Scoring started early for the Warriors, as Kevin Jordan Jr. drove in Kawaiola Takemura in the first inning. Master's would tack on a run in the bottom half and then another in the second to go ahead 2-1.

With two out in the third, Jessup's bats struck for four-consecutive doubles, plating three runs. Jessup would add runs in the seventh and eighth innings to push them ahead 6-3.

Master's made the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Tacking on two runs off Marlin Brucato, Jessup finally settled down to get the groundout needed to end the game and secure a 6-5 win.

In game two, it was The Master's who struck quick, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Looking for their first run of the day, Jessup finally evened the score in the fifth, thanks to a two-run double from Takemura.

Takemura had a great day offensively, as he went 4-for-7 at the plate with a pair of RBI and three runs scored.

Master's tacked on two runs in the fifth, forcing Jessup to go to the bullpen. The 4-2 lead would stand the remainder of the game.

On the hill in game two for Jessup was Max Moreno. Moreno lasted four innings, surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out three. Ricardo Torres Jr. pitched the remainder of the game in relief.

The doubleheader split pushes Jessup's record to 7-1 on the young season. Jessup's seven-game win streak was the longest in program history to start a season (Previous 5; 2019 and 2020).

"I'm excited to see how we respond tomorrow to our first loss of the season," added Paine. "We did a nice job late in the game of starting to grind out at-bats. Hopefully, we can carry that into tomorrow and take advantage of the opportunity to win a series."

Both teams will be back on the diamond tomorrow for another doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. Live streaming will be available for free by clicking HERE
