Hot Start Proves Not Enough as Warriors Lose to No. 23 Corban

Warriors put up seven runs in the first inning; next game comes Saturday at Simpson

LINCOLN, Calif. - Jessup softball was back on their home field Monday afternoon as they hosted No. 23 Corban University. Despite a strong opening inning, the Warriors were unable to keep pace and lost 10-7, putting their record at 2-3.

"We got ahead of ourselves today and had a strong first inning, but you have to play the whole seven innings to deserve a win. Today we didn't do that," said head coach Brie Campbell.

After a pair of Corban base hits and two stolen bases, Jessup was in a bind as the first inning started with two runners in scoring possession. Fortunately for the Warriors, they were able to get the next three batters out with no runs crossing the plate.

Kaela Hangebrauck was walked as the lead-off hitter, then the Warriors proceeded to do their damage. After a Hailey Hiett single advanced Hangebrauck to third, Seli Aholelei's base hit down the right side scored two runs. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, Haley Chaboya was hit by a pitch that scored the third run. Two more runs came in off a successful bunt from Terra Goetz, and an additional two runs came in after a pair of base hits from Hangebrauck and Hiett.

Corban then responded with their biggest inning in the top of the second with five base hits in the frame, which led them to match Jessup's seven runs. From there, Corban began to inch away, and by the end of the ball game, Jessup lost 10-7.

Hiett ended her day with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Aholelei and Goetz each had a pair of RBI's. Goetz was on the mound for the final five innings giving up four hits and only two earned runs.

Campbell ended by saying, "It's early, we've got a lot of games to play against some of the best competition in the country, we'll get back to work this week to prepare for another great weekend on the diamond."

The Warriors will be back in action as they travel to Redding to play the Simpson Red Hawks on February 13 at 10 a.m.
