Freeman’s Two Early Goals Help Warriors Defeat ACU

The Warriors got a pair of early goals and clutch defense as they beat the Firestorm 2-1

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Jessup Men's Soccer (4-3, 2-1) got back to their winning ways on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Christian University Firestorm (4-5, 2-2). After a pair of early goals, the Warriors showcased standout defense to get the job done.

Head coach Greg Lazaga enjoyed seeing his team win, saying, "I would call today a solid game all around. ACU is a talented squad and is very well-coached." Lazaga continued by praising his upperclassmen, "Several guys like Derek (Vredenburgh) and Danny (Ascencio) stepped up and had a major impact for us, giving us a measure of poise and composure when needed. Their leadership gave us the confidence to maintain structure and stick with the system on both sides of the ball."

The Warriors wasted no time as they had their pedal to the metal right at kickoff. Jessup had possession, and Tanner Federico connected with Josh Freeman for the first goal of the match. Freeman wasn't done there either, as he netted his second goal by turning and shaking a pair of defenders before drilling the shot.

ACU did what they could to attempt a comeback as they scored in the fifty-eighth minute. The Firestorm continued to press on, but the Warrior defense stood firm. In the eighty-seventh minute, ACU was well within striking distance, and a shot was on frame, but Connor Edwards made a diving effort to prevent the equalizing goal from being scored.

Edwards played a full 90-minutes in goal for the Warriors Thursday. Edwards made two saves while allowing just one goal. In three games this season, the Warriors are 2-1 with Edwards in goal.

The homestand continues for the Warriors as they will take the field on Saturday at 1:30 PM against Ottawa University (Az.). That match can be live-streamed HERE.
